If we could zoom way in on the small seedling leaves, I like to think that we would see specks of dust with tiny lichens growing on the dust specks.

And we know that if we put the lichens under a microscope,
we would see many teeny-tiny green algae growing inside each lichen cells.

Seeds which sprout in strange places in a garden can give the garden a more natural charm.
I like to leave seedlings to grow when they sprout randomly.

I really agree, Caroline!

My favorite volunteers are healthy plants that re-seeded from unhappy, failing plants that I sowed at the wrong time or otherwise abused.

Mother Nature shows me how they SHOULD have grown.

Chelle: These are great photos--it just shows how observant you are when you are in your garden. That is a wonderful trait! I fear sometimes I miss things because all I see is what needs to be done yet!!!

I hadn't thought of it that way, Linda, but you're right! I can spend a half-hour on a section of yard or trail just studying things, when I feel certain most folks would just stride right on by. I get some really funny looks sometimes too! Hilarious!
