I didn't know., but i'm not surprised. Last year I got seeds from them and the packaging was so bad! Tiny seeds NOT inside a smaller bag and caight in the sealed sides, top and bottom of the packages. Impossible to remove without losing most of the seeds!

I did not know either.
And yes their packaging had problems.
I wonder if it is just the USA and Canada part or the parent company as well?

I thought that they had just bought up a bunch of small Canadian seed dealers?

I have bought lots of seeds from them, things you can't get other places. I agree packaging is not that great. Still sad.

I gave up on them several years ago. They messed up my orders, seed counts were short more than once. I don't think I've bought from them for 3 or 4 years. I hated those foil packs, too.

I used to buy their seeds occasionally from one of our local garden centers. Never really had an issue with the seeds germinating, and once in a while they had some nice varieties to choose from. Sorry to see some of these older companies go by the wayside.

I've only bought from them a few times, but they did have some seeds I could find nowhere else. Too bad to see them go.

I just looked and there is no mention of closure on this site - http://www.thompson-morgan.com... or this one - http://www.tmseeds.com/ or this one - http://www.thompsonmorgan.ca/. All three divisions seem to be operational and accepting orders for this year's season. Maybe they were just having a bad day on their website when you tried.

It did not make sense that they had bought up several small seed dealers and then closed down.

Still, unless they change their packaging, I will avoid ordering from them.

Same here!
I like seeds, especially small seeds, to come in a glassine envelope,
and enclosed in another package. The better seed dealers do this.
And nix on the small plastic zip loc bags---small seeds stick in them.

Looks like Thompson Morgan US was bought out by Gardens Alive. No wonder things have gone downhill.

The envelope situation is one of the reasons I LOVE Swallowtail, Summerhill, and Diane's (those are the first that come to mind. there are for sure others). They all use a glassine envelope when necessary, then a plastic baggie. And Swallowtail and Summerhill then put that in a paper envelope. Diane uses a sticker on the plastic baggie.

I have bought seed from T&M for well over fifty years, starting when I was living in England. Seed was almost always great and the selection was wonderful.
When my wife and I moved to Washington State (zone 8) I started to buy from their New York branch. I had some awful results from there - an order of special geranium plants arrived dry and quite dead, pre-sprouted Chilean Bells (Lapageria) arrived looking as if it had been sprouted about three or four weeks previously. The main root was about four inches long and snapped as soon as I attempted to plant it. Most of the seed I got was okay but rather expensive I thought and the section was not what I had become used to. Then in the Spring I didn't receive my catalogue as usual. Going on line the selection appeared to be minimal and when I phoned to ask about that I was told that when that lot was gone, the doors were going to close. I was also told that they had been sold to the Mississipi Bulb Company so no wonder the quality dropped.
T&M is still in business in England (Thompsonandmorgan.co.uk). There is also a wonderful seed company in England who stock a wonderful selection of really unusual seed. Googling ChilternSeeds should get it, although you might have to append the UK somewhere. I just looked for my catalogues but they are missing for the moment.
