The flowers are strange in the sense that they are very sturdy and look like made of wax, the colour is a greenish yellow, size is about 5cm.
I couldn't take a picture of the whole tree like often is the case in the rainforest, shrubs, trees, epiphytes and vines are growing all through and over each other, often it is difficult to find out who is who in that entangled foliage mass.. Rolling my eyes.

I'm not yet having any success Myriam! The habit reminds me of Styrax but the flowers on yours don't have stamens!

Suggesting the 'petals' are maybe 'tepals' with a fruit or nut forming in the middle?

Are you sure it was a tree, or could it be a climbing plant on a tree?

I still can't get the Flora do Brasil site.

I also didn't manage to get to the 'Flora do Brasil' also not yesterday they are probably working on it..
I feel you're on the right track with the Custard Apple, I've seen fallen fruits on the ground, but in another area by the river. The flowers though also look so waxy..
Yes, it is very weird that the flowers don't seem to have stamens, another strange thing about them i also noticed at the time.
No I really think it is not a vine, it is a tree, though not that very big, I traced back the rather thin trunk all the way down, amongst all the entanglement, took a photo of it even but the light conditions were so challenging, it came out too blurred. It is very difficult with a scorching sunlight from way above, the contrasts are very strong..

I did found what looked like a seed pod though on the bolder underneath the tree, but wasn't sure if it was from the tree..

The seed pod, but probably from another plant, I think I see some remnants of stamen on them..:

I opened it up but it looks moulded inside..

I was searching for seed pods and found the neo-tropical plant site I had lost!

Guatteria sellowiana has a similar flower, now all we need is Flora do Brasil to check out other species. Rolling my eyes.

I've put that neotropical plant-site on my taskbar; very useful!

In the mean while the 'Flora do Brasil' is back on line:

8 species are recorded for the Rio de Janeiro state:
- Guatteria australis
- Guatteria campestris
- Guatteria candolleana
- Guatteria ferruginea
- Guatteria latifolia
- Guatteria pohliana
- Guatteria sellowiana ! Smiling
- Guatteria villosissima

I feel that Guatteria sellowiana is indeed the best match! Thank You!

Thumbs up I agree Myriam, the others which can be found have clustered fruits and/or narrower leaves.

There's a few photos on the link at the bottom for "North American and Neotropical species" which doesn't come up if I copy the page ..
