Good idea. I have a pile of scrap lumber...where in the world did it come from? Well, we've been here 30 years and I think I actually moved a lot of this from my elderly neighbor's property years ago. I want it gone, especially since I know what plants I want in this spot. Probably cost about $500 by weight to get a dumpster in. Cannot safely burn here any longer. I'd seriously thought of burying it as the base of a berm, but didn't want to bring in dirt to cover it,either. We also have some stumps, etc. Now if I can find a suitable spot, I think I know where all that scrap lumber is going. Don't have loads of hay, but we're constantly shredding material from our trees and I'll start collecting cardboard, paper,etc.

Sherry, that spot does look fairly promising. Hopefully there's no treated lumber in there, though.

If you have leaves and grass clippings, you could just start covering the wood with that. After a few seasons of being covered with moist compostable material, it'll start breaking down. Once you start growing plants and getting worms and soil bacteria going in there, the breaking down of the lumber will accelerate quite quickly.

No, no pressure treated lumber. No grass clippings, but we're constantly shredding cut back trees, etc...Only thing needed now is the enrgy to start moving it.

I have a couple of questions:
1. I have a spot with creeping charlie, can I lay the logs over it or do I have to dig it up?

2. How do the Hugelkultur beds do in part sun conditions?
