any idea what might this be? rather large leaves - perhaps over a foot?

I don't know what it is but it doesn't resemble begonia.

Note that it has square stems, if that helps!

The leaves remind me of something in the Brassica family, almost like cabbage but the growth habit doesn't fit unless the plant was going off to seed.

My mind is refusing to fit this into a type of ornamental plant, it looks more vegetable!

it's in Fairchild (Miami, FL) bot garden rare-plants conservatory - so it's not something common. Definitely something tropical - and most likely not a vegetable...;). The leaves curl similar to begonias. attendants there are seriously clueless - so no help. and it's in the middle of the bed - no label. even if there was a label - it would be too far to reach. i went thru all begonias listed for conservatory - and nothing matches.
from image search i got somewhat similar begonia gray feathers - but the veining is not well defined and is not white and the leaf is different.
i am not saying it's a begonia - it just reminded me of one.

They do have breadfruit and kava in the conservatory, so it's not restricted to ornamentals ..

On the plant list pdf the plot reference for the greenhouse is RPH (rare plant house)

i am quite familiar with all fairchild listings in all it's variants - they contain no pics and are quite long, even if you go by plot number. i've poked around them with some guesses - without luck so far. that is why i am asking here for a visual ID, if anybody can make some guesses at least.
yes, there are fruit trees and shrubs there - but no leafy vegetables. so, i do not think it's a vegetable :).

If you could give as much information as possible it would help, working with information is so much easier than working blind.

You are asking if anyone recognises it and someone may do that, but my method usually involves searching a 'suspected' family within a database if there is one, and google images. It's easy enough to copy the plant from the pdf by highlighting and copy on a right click, then paste in a google image search.

The plot number if you could find that out would make searching the pdf easier as you can use (Ctrl + F) which brings up a little box on the top right corner, then the drop box "find next in current pdf" will take you directly to those entries.

Janet, my procedure is just like yours - i've already spent quite some time looking, trust me on this one;). and i am a software developer by profession - so i know how to use the knobs and whistles...
i am quite good at image search too and usually within 30 min can narrow it down. but not this time!
but i am not so good with suspected families ...yet;). so what would your family guess be?

Except for the squarish stems, the leaves remind me somewhat of Crystal Anthurium (Anthurium crystallinum)

that is def not A crystallinum - i am familiar with that.
and on the large pic you can actually see on bottom left side - what might be a young A.crystallinum leaf. or perhaps A clarinervium (which is not listed for RPH).

That last photo makes it look completely different! It now looks like an Aroid, the location next to water might be a clue as it must like to have steamy moisture.

That's the million $ question! Hilarious!

The form of the leaf and stem does seem to indicate begonia! Shrug!

that's what i was getting at :))). i really need to film this on a camcorder!
i 'fess up - i still after many years of going to fairchild cannot label properly all rooms of the conservatory and cannot find a map labeled with letters anywhere at all (so i can xref it with pdf's)
on the pdf - there are many-many RPH's - i'm sure i was in all of them, but it's always a blur! kind of like enchanted circle?!
i tried from the other direction - i know where some unique plants are located...but then it turns out they are listed in more rooms then one.
and the ones i do recognize for sure and remember clearly - don't seem to be listed at ALL! and so it goes...so their pdf's have to be taken with a grain of salt - they are not accurate enough, unfortunately. or i am under a spell, obviously nodding

There is a map on their site but it doesn't label the greenhouse areas. Sighing!

A clue, if you're sure of the name of the plant next to it, that might give the location. The ferns are Adiantum and I think Pteris?

No Pteris found, but Adiantum capillus-veneris is in RPH-B5, there's other Adiantum in different areas.

Nothing found in RPH-B5

Adiantum caudatum, which doesn't look like it but could be, in RPH-A5:RPH-B8

Nothing in RPH-A5, nor in RPH-B8

The next two Adiantum don't look like the one shown, and the location for A. tenerum already checked.

Adiantum trapeziforme in RPH-B1

Nothing in RPH-B1

That only leaves RPH-B7 for the other Adiantum.

Anthurium crystallinum is in that section, RPH-B7!

https://www.google.co.uk/searc...

Nothing in RPH-B7

Anthurium crystallinum could be in more than one location. I agree, the pdf list is lacking. nodding

that's what i usually do too ...it gets frustrating very fast.
it's no big deal - just a curious plant, very pretty too.
that fern on bot right - how about that? can't ID it either..
i have a bigger pic of that, i think.
