Hi. I have a lot of plants, and I find myself getting more all the time. The thing is, I keep my plants in my bedroom, and it's pretty small. I'm running out of space. I live in Canada, so I can't put them outside either. Does anyone have any ideas, or pictures of things you've done or seen for space saving with plants? I've seen some wall planters, and some hanging ones for indoors. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I go vertical indoors, depending on size of plant and weight of container:

This is my orchid stand, just a fence post from our local Home depot and my hubby just made it with wheels so I can move it easily to the sink; but usually I just remove them one at a time.


I use hang-a-pot hangers and containers with a lip so it can easily latch on it:

You can also use grid cubes..this will again depend on the size and weight of your plants.

This one I have outdoors, but it can be used indoors. The grid can be reconfigured in whatever style you like, can be upright, or horizontal or corner, depends on how many grid panels you have: you will just have to put some saucers on each plant to catch excess water.




Or you can try and use multi-stacking containers, I use this outdoors, but it can be good for herbs, and smaller succulents, placed near a window:

As far as downsizing goes I may compromise and see if I can get a humidlifer set up for my room in exchange for less plants.- bottom line is they are taking over my room and maybe my staff will let me do the humidifier thing if I don't overdo it and give up some of the plants, I was thinking the papyris dwarf, it needs a pond/ and golden pothos and purple heart plant both are outgrowing their containers anyway , once devided up and potted off, they'd make good plants for someone

maybe the money tree too sense it will never flower indoors and gets very large. but that's it. i'm keeping the satin potho's though those are harder to find.

I live in Florida so most of my plants stay outside but one winter when we were having an unusually really cold period I took metal plant brackets and had my husband hang them on either side of the windows in a guest bedroom. Then I hung a wooden pole that I found in the garage across one window and a PVC pipe across the other and hung plants all along those rods. I wish I had photos but they were lost when my laptop crashed a couple of years ago. I've been known to hang plants on curtain rods but that's not a great idea because too much weight can end up ripping the curtain rods out of the wall. Ask me how I know that.

I like/love the idea of living in a warmer climate. but the social services system ( I think) keeps me bound to the north. People with disabilities have it pretty good here in MN compared to the south . Then again wrestling with invasive pythons/catching overgrown bass and catfish and growing monster white bird of paradises and ficus trees in the front lawn sounds good enough to do in my lifetime...sigh maybe after my mom and dad pass away. which I hope doesn't happen for as long as possible. They live 5 1/2 hours out of the city its hard enough to see um. as I cant fly alone and the driving distance is hard on the staff.

Plants that enjoy the same conditions can be good companions in the same pot. I have a limit of 100 pots, but no limit on number of plants that can be in those pots. Here's some combo pots that might give you ideas.

Tiffany, yes that is very similar to what we did in the guest bedroom at our old house for plants. One year my husband also rigged up planter poles for me around the perimeter of our screened pool enclosure because I had so many plants. He took galvanized metal poles used for chain link fencing, cut them to length, painted them brown to match the aluminum and hung them from metal brackets. When I look at these old photos it amazes me at how many plants I had eight or nine years ago; I've since downsized greatly!

Thanks Tiffany but those are old photos from our previous house where we lived for 37 years. We just recently sold that place after renting it out for a couple of years ... we decided we didn't want to be landlords anymore so we put it on the market and sold it. I gave away many plants before we moved to our current home a little over 3 years ago, this house is larger but with no pool and a much smaller lot with less space for plants than I had at the old house.

The decisions of which plants to keep must have been tough, Lin!

I forgot to say that I didn't jump straight into putting a dozen diff plants in pots together all at once. There was an intermediate step of overcrowding when small pots were sitting in/on bigger pots. That was actually good 'practice' to gauge light compatibility, and test-drive the appearance of various combos. A group pot isn't a life decision though. Whenever you're repotting, you can re-arrange/separate things to keep everybody happy.

There's also the tactic of hanging other pots from the rim of a first pot, as long as it is strong enough to hold the extra weight.

There are various styles of stacking pots. Tall, thin plants (and/or trellised plants) are easier to have around than a plant that takes up a lot of horizontal space.

Developing a taste for diminutive plants can help also. Even though I have various rooms in which I can put plants, I still don't have room for something like Monstera or a large, braided/weeping Ficus tree, although I'd love to have both of these. Gotta be realistic about how much space is in the house.
