Sad day. Had to say goodbye to my Goldfish plant. I have had it for 8 years, it was the only plant I brought from
California to Nebraska when I moved. It always did well in winter in the house and would enjoy spring time outside.
I did not do anything different, but the past few months it has been failing, finally just kept drying up and
flaking away. This spring when I go to the nursery see if I can find one in the houseplants. Maybe it just died
of old age...it was always a favorite so I hope to find another, I tossed it in the trash, it was beyond gone. Sighing!

Aww sorry to hear that Linda. Like parting with an old friend.

I had some plants that did similarly..one a succulent, thankfully I was able to get some cuttings, before mommy plant bid adieu. My Dracaena sanderiana also did a swan song after 7 years, but I have not given up on a stalk cutting yet, but the main plant is gone.

I have not grown goldfish plant..hope you can find a replacement this Spring. Smiling

I have a really pretty goldfish plant; I must take a picture. I've had it for two years now and yesterday I took some cuttings - I hope they root.

This is a good lesson. If any of us have a favorite plant, perhaps we should be taking cuttings each year. We can share the rooted cuttings with our plant friends or have one rooted cutting as a back up just in case our original plant bites the dust. Thumbs up

Apart from taking some cuttings from my goldfish plant (and I don't know the variety but it has dark, glossy leaves), I bought one at a plant sale this past weekend. The label said it is a Columnea. No other information. Here's a picture I just took.

Very very pretty! Don`t forget to take a cutting and start another just in case!

@freedombel --you're right. I'm going to make a point of taking a lot of cuttings from some of my favorites this year. I'll be taking two classes on propagation next month and hope to come away with a lot of knowledge.

What fun! Sounds very interesting to take classes on something that we love to do!

T he cuttings I took from my goldfish plant are looking good and healthy. I took about six and placed them around a small hanging pot. Didn't get a chance this weekend to do the same with the Columnea, but I'll get to it in a few days. These will make really nice plants, eventually, to give as birthday gifts. I've found that it's hard to find small hanging baskets. You can find them being sold sometimes, but with a plant already in it. I'm going to have to do some source checking.
