Thread OP

I know that Spider plant and Mother-in-Law's Tongue produce oxygen at night. That's why they are very good in bedroom.

Do Spider plant and Mother-in-Law's Tongue produce oxygen at during the day?

Let me suggest that Spider plant produce A oxygen at night. How much oxygen does Spider plant produce at during day? A or 2*a or A/2?

Let me suggest that Mother-in-Law's Tongue produce B oxygen at night. How much oxygen does Mother-in-Law's Tongue produce at during day? B or 2*B or B/2?

Can you compare A and B? (Lets talk about plants in good shape and in good ัondition, I mean adult plants)

Thank you.

Spider Plant for me is Vittatum

Mother-in-Law's Tongue for me is Sansevieria laurentii

I know that you can't write exact figures but you can write approximate figures. For example A>B or something like that. I'd like to read any your supposition.

This is the first time I'm learning that the Spider plant gives off oxygen at night. Could you list a reference?

You may find some info on NASA web sight. NASA did some experiments with spider plants and the oxygen they produced at the space station.

I'm feeling unsure about this topic. Plants use CO2 during the day and give off O2. But I think they may reverse at night, as there is no sunlight for metabolism.
We need some better data/sources. I didn't see aything yet about oxygen production at night, only removal of pollutants. Shrug!

I have trouble believing that one small plant will make a huge difference in the average person's home.
200 plants ? Maybe. Are we really going to have and care for plants based on what NASA says? Myself, I'll go with my heart and surround with what looks good. Gene

It was not that long ago where people were banning plants from bedrooms because they mistakenly believed that plants "steal" oxygen at night. Now we seem to have come full circle with allegations that plants produce oxygen at night. In general, during photosynthesis (in the presence of sunlight) plants do use CO2 and emit oxygen, both in rather small quantities. When the sun goes down, photosynthesis stops and the use of CO2 and production of oxygen pretty much stops. There may be a slight tipping toward CO2 production at night, but it is very small and over the course of any 24 hour period, plants produce more oxygen than CO2. In balance, then, plants are beneficial in that regard.

That said, Gene is correct in writing that the overall effect is rather marginal unless you are living in a room or house that is crammed full of plants. This also applies to the NASA studies regarding the air-cleaning ability of plants; they are greatly exaggerated.

Select plants based on the available light and enjoy plants because they look nice and make you happy, not because of some exaggerated health benefits. Thumbs up

Studies proves otherwise. Hospital patients recover faster when rooms are filled with plants. So not only does it have a physical effect, but also mental.

One tiny plant may not be enough, but its better than nothing.

I have a few plants laid out in my house. Snake plant and Areca palm in the living room on each side of the tv. There are 3ft tall. A snake plant in the office, spider plant anf parlor palm in guest bath, spider plant on my room and a spider and snake plant in the main bath.

Not only do they help clean the air, but they make the room look a lot nicer. And provide some humidity.

Hi & welcome, Vbx! Agree, the mental boost even if only from a placebo effect of the belief that the atmosphere is improved in some way by the addition of plants does have value. Any inherent value may be debatable and difficult to quantify but the mental aspect is worthy of attention, as far as my opinion goes. I believe there are people who notice and appreciate plants more than others, and if so, the effect would not be universal for all people but very effective for those who are affected.

With sanseveria, they require very little light to survive. So that said, they would continue to produce O2 on a lower light level but none at no light. They also remove radon gas which is in very small levels most of the time and helps improve your health. But I must totally agree that this is exaggerated and would take a house full of plants to help maybe a child no less. I think this is an excuse we use to tell our spouse's we need more plants in our house.

If you have a spousal plant problem, remind him (her) that plants are proven mood enhancers, maybe even aphrodisiacs! Whatever works.
