This plant is indicated here as a cultivar:


I couldn't find this plant listed on MOBOT, as a plain species or cultivar, though some of the pics in the entry were taken at their garden. They way the name is written on the label in 2 of the pics indicates it's a cultivar also. I'm not always successful in searching for them even when they are valid, but couldn't find a patent for this name, probably because it's also the usual common name. If it is a cultivar, I better get to work finding one!

Also interesting is how the flowers in the pics of the MOBOT plant show this is not K. luciae, but the reddish foliage breaks the 'rule' that K. tetraphylla/thyrsifolia doesn't make red leaves.

I have questions about it too. When I look closely at the sign, it says Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, but our entry says K. tetraphylla. Both are accepted names, so I had to decline your proposal to add thyrsiflora as a synonym.

I always though Flapjacks was just a common name.

I think it probably was entered as a cultivar on the basis of the MOBOT sign in jmorth's photos. But speaking of that sign, I'm going to change the species to thyrsiflora. I suspect we once listed K. thyrsiflora as a synonym of K. tetraphylla, because we once (foolishly?) took The Plant List at its word, but now that we know it's a separate species, I'm going to follow the MOBOT sign all the way.

I took it at face value, silly me, I guess.

Also curious why, if flapjacks is just the common name, they would punctuate the sign as a cultivar name. Is that the convention throughout the gardens' signs? And still curious why there are plants in the MOBOT garden that aren't in their database.

My thought has always been that Flapjack Plant and Paddle Plant were common names rather than true cultivar names. I've never seen a Kalanchoe with the cultivar name Flapjacks and even googling I don't find a cultivar with that name.

If the article in the Cacti & Succulent Journal (at the San Marcos link) is correct, and there are 2 diff species of thyrsiflora and tetraphylla, the MOBOT plant must be K. tetraphylla all along, with those flowers in conjunction with the red foliage.

I inquired about this at MOBOT, their response -

On our labels the top line is the common name. Below is the genus name (Kalanchoe), specific epithet (thyrsiflora) and then the cultivar name (‘Flapjacks’). It would not be uncommon for someone to combine the cultivar name and common name in common speech and refer to this plant as Flapjack kalanchoe. We, however, do not repeat the cultivar name in the common name. We just use the common name used for the species Kalanchoe thyrsiflora (Genus name plus specific epithet).
