Just saw my first one the other day on my Purple Firespike. I don't have feeders; the birds have to do things the natural way. Rolling on the floor laughing

Later on some hummers will stay for the season, but at first they'll only be here to find nectar, then they'll leave. Melanie, as long as the hummers get enough nectar, they'll be happy, whether from feeders or flowers.

Linda, I make them work for it! If they want an easy meal, they can fly up to see my grandma in WV. She always has feeders out. Well, not always. Just when it's warm. I was there last September and I'd never visited that late in the year before. I was at a genealogy conference in Louisa, KY and then we went over to WV to see Grandma. I was watching the local news with her one day and the weatherman was telling everyone it was time to bring in their hummingbird feeders to encourage them to move south. I thought it was pretty neat that the weatherman was up on things like that. I found it very responsible.

We had a treat this morning. We were sitting on the front porch & there's a hummie feeder hanging right there over the porch rail just in front of our foot rests. A hummie came up & we froze. Hilarious! It landed on the feeder & sipped and then just sat there for a while. This is what we've been waiting for. The time when our hummies recognize us & are no longer so shy. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! This must be one of our regulars from the past 2 years. Of course I did not have the camera out there.

This photo was taken through the *dirty* kitchen window yesterday.

We're seeing a lot of action now. Today I was looking out front & saw one sipping, I walked into the kitchen & saw one sipping & then went onto the back porch where I saw one on the back yard feeder too. Hurray! Hurray!

They sure have been busy here! The front feeder is getting sucked dry faster than the other two. So far we have a beautiful male dominating the feeder out the kitchen window -- in years past it's been a female. We'll see if he can retain dominance. I expect they are all "getting along" right now as it's mating season. I did see a male & female fly off to an oak together (without fighting) after visiting the same feeder.

Fantastic! But all I'm seeing is a male, probably the same one every day. I keep wondering when the others will come by...the male must be getting lonely!

The one I saw was probably only passing through. The ones that nest here don't seem to arrive until mid to late May at the earliest.

Meredith, so glad to see your hummer pics. When I put in my count for PFW, I had to put in a description of the hummingbird I saw. The reason they gave was that he isn't supposed to be here at this time. LOL. Birds don't follow their rules! Count is over for this year. This is the first time I've been able to count a hummer for PFW, so I guess they are right. I wasn't fast enough to get a picture. I have that same feeder.

Yay Meredith! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Nice pretty male.

Becky, I think we all have that same feeder. Hilarious! They really are the best! Becky, what is PFW? I know about the Great Backyard Bird Count but not PWF.
