Ice Plant (Delosperma 'Jewel of Desert Garnet')
wondering if these stay green over the winter, because mine looks dead? It is just a small one I planted last fall.

depends on the winter...
They are evergreen in some climates.
If they freeze, they will die back to the ground and can emerge from the crown and rooted runners if the roots made it thru the winter.
But if the roots sog-out and rot, during the winter and/or spring thaw, then it's probably a goner

well it's a gonner then! We have wet soggy soil here most of the winter so I may not try this plant again. Thank you.

The only way I ever got any to over winter was in a raised area using cactus soil with a good amount of sand added. If you have room you can bring some cuttings inside each fall, they are easy to root.

But give it time! I've had several appear to be totally dead. But I let them be and many have come back, if only just a tiny piece. But that is all that it takes.

I finally was able to assess all of my ice plants. Not a good winter for them. It would appear that three are for sure gone. With another two only having the slightest bit of life. But I'll leave them for quite a while to see what happens.

However, on two of them I noticed seed pods. I carefully cut most of them off. Then I went in the house and opened them up. Wow, it was not easy to get the seeds out. And they are TINY! Perhaps I should have let them dry totally out for a few days. Oh well. I still was able to get lots of seeds. No idea if they will be viable. But heck I'll try. Also they are from hybrids. So even if they are viable no idea what I will get.

I dug mine up yesterday and it was mushy, just as I suspected. We have soggy winters here and summer seems forever to come, so I don't think this plant would do well for me here. I just bought a small one at Lowes to try. It was desert jewel or something like that. The color was really rich. I do have pretty good luck with sedums though, so I guess I'll stick w those.

I treat mine as annuals and when I get them to overwinter I am thrilled. I keep trying them every year because I just love them.

I have had lots of luck with these in a large clay pot outside. The Jewel of Desert series isn't as hardy as the new Wheels of Wonder series, but both have survived here. I also grew some in a hanging basket and brought them in for the winter. They do ok under a shop light indoors over the winter like house plants.

One that is more winter hardy is Fire Spinner. It stays green all winter and doesn't die even in the regular garden soil. Another good one is Delosperma ashtonii 'Blut.' Another good one is Delosperma 'Kelaidis.' All three of these stayed green through winter.

These are so cheap and easy to root. I think they would be worth it even if I had to buy some each year.

Mine are still under quite a bit of snow , so only time will tell. Fire Spinner did survive for a couple of years outdoors here. And hoping to get some of the Wheels of wonder this Spring.

If it's dead, just get a new one. If it has any green on it, try taking a cutting.

I treat them like annuals and when I get them to survive another year or two I consider it a gift. I can't seem to find any rhyme or reason to their failure.

That kind of explains my problems with ice plants. I like them, but they seem to get over-run with weeds so easily and they are hard to weed around.

Some plants, like my Stokes Asters, just seem to supress weeds naturally by leaf spread. The ice plants can't.

I guess I should have looked further I just posted about this plant. Nobody has to repeat themselves. I will not feel offended.
