😢 I lost all but one of my seedlings. They were doing great and then checked on them yesterday and they had drooped over and wilted. Only one is still standing. What happened? 😥😰😱😭

Don't give up, use a spray bottle and spray water around the seedling, it my be just temperamental and want a drink

Yes, sometime the solution is just that simple. Try to mist them a bit and see what happens.

Well, misting them did not work. They turned mushy.

I used coir only. They were approximately 3" tall.

Well, there goes my theory about your seedlings. My understanding is that coir is sterile, correct? I don't know what could have been the cause. Sorry you lost your babies, that is heart-breaking for you.

Well I have two that survived and more planted. So they must have been weak and not meant to be. At least that is what I tell myself. Lol😉

Do you have some Banrot? That is supposed to take care of damp off.

I remember years ago reading that someone saved some of their damp-off affected Brug seedlings by treating them like cuttings. As I remember, somewhat fuzzily, they used clean nail scissors to cut about 1/2" inch of the infected hypocotyledonous stem off. Then they dipped it in rooting hormone (maybe with fungicide added?) and treated it just like a cutting (with a humidity dome, etc.) The seedlings produced new roots from the hypocotyl. I don't think all of them made it but some did so it might be worth a try if it happens again.

Interesting you said, that Danita............and BTW, hi!!! About the rooting the seedling top. I did just that. I dropped a tray of new seedlings about a month ago and one lost it's head. I thought it was a goner but thought, what the heck and stuck the top in the same pot as it was growing in and then let it alone. It is now nearly 2" tall, slower than my other seedlings but it fed off of the seed leaves until the seed leaves were all used up and died. Kept the top alive long enough to root and now I have a healthy little seedling from that popped off top!!!

I'm pretty sure that I read about someone saving their damp-off seedlings this way over at BGI many years ago. I can't remember who that clever person was, but I still remembered the basic idea.

I think sometimes when we don't listen to the experts but just do what makes sense, we discover "new" ways of doing things.
And hey, this morning I was looking at that saved seedling and the stem that was left from the popped off top is actually putting out some tiny leaves. I did not know it would do that!

My daughter-in-law Sandy decided to pollinate her culebra blossoms last summer. None of them made pods but she did it again in November when it and some other brugs were blooming in her greenhouse and she got three pods out of her doing something I told her "would not work"! Why did I tell her that? Because it was "common knowledge" that you could not cross culebra to another brug....... good thing she did not listen to me!!!

She has told me she will give me a few of the seeds! So far, the only brugs with culebra's strappy leaves are on brugs that are growing in South America............and Australia!!! And Aussies are hybridizing those and sharing a few seeds with some select American brug growers. Will be interesting to see what comes of these Aussie seedlings and now, the culebra seedlings! I just love brugs with those strappy serrated leaves!!
