Celebrating Gardening: 2015
Well considering how crappy cold this winter was here in Bruce County Ontario. the coldest on record for most of this winter, the ground is going to be doing this frost/thaw quite a bit in the next while. we are up to 40F and then down to -10F over 2 days.........
It was just on the news that many of the tulips might get frosted and no flowers here this year at all. the daffs and crocus should be ok
but I have 300 plus new lilies planted that are not going to like this frost, thaw.
not expected to see much change until sometime in the start of June.... late late spring with all the lakes frozen...

so I am thinking frost blankets will be the best thing to help save the lilies from this frost/thaw and maybe the tulips too..

just thought I would add this tip in case anyone will be having the same issues with their gardens as well.

I am going to pot my new lilies until the new bed is done in 12 inch by 10 in deep pots and move them in and out of the garage until the danger of the hard frosts are over..

I do not like the Canadian Winters.....
usually we have a typical winter here for zone 5 but not this year or last year for sure...

With 300 new lilies that is a lot of frost blankets. I bought some of those silver survival blankets to drape over my hoop houses on raised beds. I guess I would turn the silver side in to reflect heat back on the plants and soil. Have to get the heat lamps out there soon.

Copper spray for a few degrees of frost protection will help once the lilies are up if you put it on just before a frost, copper is sold for disease control.

not sure if you can get copper spray here but will check into that..........thanks

I have 8 large frost blankets coming..today

the weather tonight is dropping down to -14 but tomorrow we are back up to 34 and the weather is better for awhile after that too... cold at night time though

no signs of the lilies yet
no signs of the crocus yet
no signs of the daffs yet
but lots of signs of tulips.......which my mom that is 80 has never seen happen at this time before in her life.....

have a feeling we are in a for a very strange spring here
lots of thaw/freeze...

does anyone know when the lilies start to come up in zone 5??
