We will be building a pergola this year. I was wondering if I planted a trumpet vine in a large (20 inch, at least) pot if it would overwinter, or does it need to be in the ground for it to live? I really don't want one to overtake everything, and a pot seems to be the best way to go if it would like that. I love trumpet vines on pergolas.

From what I've seen here they're almost impossible to kill...or contain. Ours sent out runners through the drain holes of the pot and took off across the yard. We've been battling it for almost 20 years now, and it's still winning the war.

Our pot was set into the soil halfway, so I'm pretty sure that would be fine where you are, too.

The pot would be set on cement. And I am very capable of hacking off runners.

Chelle, I totally agree with you on trumpet vines. I have been hacking off and digging out runners for years and yet it is still here. Sometimes I wonder if I took a torch to it and burned the ends when they pop up out of the ground if it would put a end to this awful vine.

Anna would you consider a honeysuckle vine? I have both dropmore scarlet and major wheeler to me they are much nicer than the trumpet vine which starts blooming later, my honeysuckle start blooming early and continue until frost for a very long bloom season. A bonus is we have hummingbirds feeding on the honeysuckle as soon as it starts blooming until it finishes. I remember when I first had the trumpet vine it took years until it bloomed, the honeysuckle bloom much sooner.

I have a honeysuckle..................are there different varieties of it? I'm not particularly impressed with the one I have. Alot of the blooms just dry up before opening. What would be the best cultivar?

I could not say one is better than the other since one is just going on it's third year. Mine never have the blooms dry up. Just google honeysuckle vines to see some of the cultivars, then you can see what is hardy and the pictures will give you sample of what may appeal to you. @Newyorkrita has more honeysuckles she could tell which ones she likes.

That Major Wheeler is beautiful! Unfortunately, I'm sure the yellowjackets that plague us every year would love them, too. Sigh.

We have yellowjackets around here sometimes they can be nasty, I have never seen them around the honeysuckle vines.

Really? That's interesting. We had some sort of shrubs out back that had flowers that looked like honeysuckle blooms, and they were just covered with wasps and yellowjackets! Maybe I'll give one of those Major Wheelers a try. I have a long expanse of fence that needs some cover.

My very favorite trumpet honeysuckle is Major Wheeler! Very favorite my far. Another good one is Blanche Sandman and if you like yellow, the yellow trumpet John Clayton is marvelous!

In the normal flowered honeysuckles I love the late Dutch Honeysuckles such as Seritona. Also like a honeysuckle called Pink Lemonade.

Wolfie, sounds like you have way more yellowjackets than we have here. Major Wheeler does not have a scent, nor does Dropmore Scarlet which may be why I don't see yellowjackets on them.

The honeysuckles I grow are hardy here in zone 4 and lack a scent and grow where they are planted, no spreading. I know some grown in southern climates have a heavy scent plus they multiply way more than I wanted. When we were traveling the scent of those really kicked up my allergies.
