From one of my facebook friends, don't miss this if you can get there:
An enormous Talipot Palm, Corypha umbraculifera, is flowering at Pinecrest Gardens here in South Florida. This palm grows for decades then flowers once, producing millions of delicate golden flowers, then thousands of seeds and then it dies. Another one flowered here years ago and bees produced ca. 200 pounds of honey from the nectar of its flowers! If you have a chance to see this, don't miss it. This is one of the great wonders of nature.

I agree. Very cool. I guess it wants to make darn sure it leaves plenty of chances for some offspring, before it sadly dies.

We went to see it today. It is spectacular!

Pictures just don't do that palm credit. You can hide a car under a single leaf. The flower spike is taller than most big palms that we have in our yards. As you said, it is worth seeing it in person at least once.
