This tree was planted by the birds under an oak tree. It is 3 feet tall and growing well, leaves are evergreen, glossy and not fuzzy.
Across the fence in next yard there are some magnolias but their leaves are much darker than this. Because of the color my yard guy said it's not a magnolia but he could be wrong. Not a pawpaw because leaves aren't fuzzy. I'm in zone 7/8 in South Carolina, near foothills of the Appalachians

After tooling photos it seems this is a southern magnolia, apparently the foliage is lighter green in babies than in mature trees. Now I have to consider whether to move it. There is a method of digging around the tree in spring, now, and then transplanting in fall. Maybe well try that.

You can check out the photos in the database for comparison to Sweet Bay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana)
