This looks like some kind of wild lettuce. It tastes slightly bitter bur not as bad as dandelion. Leaves are firm but wilt when stir fried like kale. Yes I already ate it and was delicious and didn't cause problems. Anyone know what it's called?

I agree with Larry it looks like Cirsium horridulum. But, seriously! You cooked and ate a plant that you haven't identified?

It looks like Thistle to me also. A couple of possibilities:

Bull Thistle (Cirsium vulgare)

Bull Thistle (Cirsium horridulum)

Canada Thistle (Cirsium arvense)

I think it might be "Hedgemustard" -- Sisymbrium officinale (which is, fortunately, edible... Smiling )

You might need to allow it to flower to actually positively ID it.

Many possibilities... whatever it is, I know we have that here and I don't think it's a true thistle. Smiling

With the huge number of Cirsium species, I don't see how one could eliminate all of the other possibilities at this stage. The leaves look like Cirsium arvense, and other species of Cirsium. Canada thistle is usually a patch, not scattered individuals, but I suppose the first few plants of an invasion could start that way.

According to this Columbia University page on Canada thistle:
http://www.columbia.edu/itc/ce...

"The only states in the US that are relatively free of Canada Thistle are Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida."

Is it possible to get a close-up photo of the underside of a leaf? I'm also not sure I'm seeing any spines, are the tips of the leaves hard and pointy?

If it's Thistle of any kind it will have lots of thorns.

It reminds me somewhat of a sowthistle ( Sonchus ) of some kind:

Sow thistle -- that's what I was trying to think of!!

Judy, were the leaves really spiny ?? (I'm having a hard time imagining deciding to eat them if they were... Blinking )

@sooby Good eye! It could very well be a species of Sonchus. We have Spiny Sow-thistle (Sonchus asper) that grows here in Florida and another but I can't remember the species. Here's the database listing for Sonchus: http://garden.org/plants/brows...

I've never eaten Sowthistle but apparently it is edible:

Yes, it does look a lot like Sonchus. I should have caught that. I have Sonchus asper come-up in my yard every year. Where the smiley kicking itself? Rolling on the floor laughing

Thanks, Lin. What kept bugging me was the lack of obvious large spines, and also the pale-coloured midribs. I kept thinking I'd seen that combo before!

Do all Sonchus have white (latex) sap? If they do, and Cirsium don't, that would be a good clue.

I think it's got to be a species of Sonchus. Most Cirsium have sharp spines don't they? I know Bull Thistle has lots of sharp spines as does the Nutall's Thistle (Cirsium nuttalii) that is sprouting up all over my side yard ... very interesting and pretty bloom but ouch, those thorns are sharp!
