I bet it will be sprouting new leaves, or buds, a week from now

I am gonna do the same with my big ones, they are blooming now but still kinda dormant not too many leaves yet. I have always been afraid to cut them back too. But it's now or never they are getting huge and misshapen. Plus I need to try and propagate a few that I really like. And then it is on to grafting onto some of my seedlings.

Well, I did the cut backs -- so thank you for that advice. All the cuttings have survived. They've got leaves and some have blooms. The parent plants seem to be doing just fine and I'm happy that I've increased my collection. I'll be scouting around for the right kind of pots eventually. the wider and not so deep parts are hard to find.

I'm so reluctant to cut back like that. I wish I had the courage. Does the plant flower better with the cutback?

It sounds like you did a great job Elfie and you have rooted cuttings. That's a great plus. What method did you use to root them?

Nancy, yes they often flower a lot better when pruned some.

I left the stems in a shady place for a few days -- hot out, but no sun on them. I didn't even use rooting powder. I've got quite a few cuttings in a pot and they're getting leaves and some flowers. How long will it take for the caudex to form on each one -- any idea ? Years ?
I'll take a picture and post. I'd love to learn how to graft; I have one plant that has a deep pink flower and a white flower ! I bought it like that.

I bet that pink/white, the pink is from below the graft. Happens all the time. Don't let it take over. Prune judiciously.

Roots first on rooted cuttings, then fat roots within a year. Raised roots can be called a caudex?

When is a good time to cut back my leggy adenium? They are in full bloom without leaves right now. Are rooted cuttings just as slow to take root as they grow?

slow to root, yes. Put them aside where they can do their thing.

Full bloom without leaves is dormant, by the way. Water sparingly. Prune when new leave begin, which should be as the flowers get old. I guess!

Thanks so much, Melissa. I love when a dormant plant looks this gorgeous!

Rooted cuttings do NOT form caudexes from what I have been told. They make nice plants and will flower but only seed grown plants form a caudex.
