So, I'm looking for ideas for vines to grow on a 4' cyclone fence in the Houston area. Preferably, it will have some fragrant flowers to attract hummers, and will bloom throughout most of the summer. It will be morning shade and afternoon sun. I considered morning glories, but don't the flowers close up during the day? Ideas?

I have had Dolichos lablab, or Hyacinth Bean Vine, for years, and I wouldn't be without it. I just love it! http://davesgarden.com/guides/... It blooms all summer and fall, and the blooms are followed by pretty purple pea pods. The leaves are dark green on top, with purple veins to match the flowers, and purple on the bottom side. It winds around itself and its support, and is not overly aggressive. It is an annual, so you will need to remove the dead vine after it freezes, before the beans that have fallen to the ground germinate and begin the new vine for the year. I always save beans to give to friends, and just in case it doesn't reappear on its own. But it always has.

Another vine I have is Antigonon leptopus (Coral Vine) http://davesgarden.com/guides/.... It is perennial and has tiny tendrils that reach out and clasp to wind its way up. It blooms in the fall, and is beautiful in full bloom.

Another I have had is Thunbergia grandiflora. A little too aggressive for me, it wound up the too flimsy trellis quickly and took over the roof. But it is beautiful! http://www.floridata.com/ref/T...

Phaseolus caracalla, or snail vine is another beautiful vine.

Oh, yes. Do you know if it is hardy, Bubbles? I Have a spot for it I think - it looks like my Sandpaper Vine died in the freeze.

It made it thru the killing freeze a couple of weeks ago...but time will tell. If it lives, I can root a piece for you.

Cross Vine (Bignonia capreolata) http://www.magnoliagardensnurs... is native and beautiful. I've seen it tumbling over fences on pathways.

Wonderful fragrance, gets large, and you may need to do some whacking back, but everyone I know that has one, loves it. It really is a gorgeous vine. I would have one if I had the space.

My crossvine has stayed pretty much evergreen through all these freezes. I should have a few for the round-up. I think I saw about a half dozen out there.

Here's snail vine in Oct. Blooms sorta winding down, but it covers the ACs and garbage cans enclosure. I think it's going to come back, so I'll try to root some cuttings.

I bought a Mexican Flame Vine (Senecio confusus) at our MG plant sale. Will see how it does. Has anyone here grown one?

I had one....not sure if it'll come back after the snow. It was beautiful. Rally took off when it cooled a bit in late Sept. Covered three trellises in the back corner of the garden. Going on a nursery crawl next week so I'll look for some plants I don't think will return. And we have the Zilker Garden Festival here Sat&Sun. Always find cool plants there!

Hi Ceejaytown, the Mexican flame vine always does well for me, I have cut it back and covered it in really cold weather
My oldest daughter lived in the Woodlands for years and she had a neighbor around the corner that had one that always looked healthy
