I dearly wish that this were a more active forum and I am going to do what I can to stimulate interest. Hope each of us including lurkers do our part. I've said this several times but location ....micro-climate makes a big difference in my garden. These are in the warmest spot..

First Frost....a small plant that over wintered in a pot.

Nice group of Hosta. Am waiting for delivery on my order later this month and have hopes of a great season. The NOID I have I hope to dig up and replant with the new ones in May.

My 'First Frost' is showing nothing yet, not even a pip. As a matter of fact the only hosta in that bed that has leaves is a plain green NOID my neighbor gave me last year because she had them from years and they never grew. It has grown for me and encreased. My SunHostas are looking better, and 'So Sweet' is really growing well.
Lots of others showing pips or leaves, I will have to get out tomorrow and get pictures.

It's exciting to see life in your gardens! Still too cold for anything to start growing in my hosta beds. But, as soon as stuff starts growing, I'll join in the conversations and post pictures!

No pics here in Ohio tonite but typical growth patterns are "showing". You can have four of the same plant within 4' of one another and the strongest busts soil to say "Hello". All good on that front, they all seem to catch up by bloom. I thought I lost my only (potted) mini but was proven wrong today. Not a big deal...well, yeah it is. 5 bucks and she might bloom this year...

I love the hostas that have the purple tips emerging from the soil.

I lost several trees two yrs ago from flatline winds and I can't believe the hostas that survived that summer in the unforgiving sun. I potted them last yr, all tags gone but I do have a list that I kept. These hostas that I potted have done much better than they ever did in the ground.


The very large hosta at top of photo, Potomac Pride. Top of pot then clockwise Birchwood Parky's Gold, Blue Arrow, Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Japanese Painted Fern, Lemon Lime.

Top midline down, Baby Bunting, Allan P McConnell, and just emerging at the bottom Tea and Crumpets.
The only one I know for sure is the Potomac Pride, if any are mis IDed please chime in.

I also enjoy potted hostas of all sizes. In pots, I have option to move the pot to where the hostas will grow better or to where it will display better.

Hostas come up late here.
It will be awhile yet before we see any.

I've only potted one hosta to date but since it survived the winter I think I'll purchase and pot some other small varieties to keep it company. It's technically my mom's plant, I didn't know what to do with it when I first got it so I stuck it in a pot on the back porch at her house. That's where it stayed, lol.

Wes, I tip over all my potted hostas in late November to avoid crown rot, and I stand them up in early April.

"Tip" appreciated. This little guy/gal whatever sat on the semi-protected porch most of the winter and I fed it a pity drink here and there as it missed a lot of what the ground grown plants get. Obviously attention to temperature was observed. I think the one season increase is already obvious, the foliage will prove me right or wrong.

I thought I would have been better off to transplant to the garden but as per my usual it became an experiment. I do lose plants but far fewer than those that survive. On a do-over I wouldn't go the same route and again I appreciate the insight. FWIW this one is potted in mostly dirt (garden soil) with just enough potting soil to break mud factor. I just tried to replicate the soil it was purchased in. I really didn't expect a return, at all. I'll chalk it up to luck more than method.

Took a few photos today and need some info:
I had this hosta come up the other day and it's leaves were all stuck together. I tried to be gentle but I guess even that was too rough as I tore the leaves all up trying to pry them open. They appeared to be almost glued together and already had holes eaten in them. Reminded me very much of a canna lily with leaf rollers (something I have and absolutely hate). Does anyone know what causes this in hostas? I really hate it because I think it was a seedling I grew and if so, it is the only one I have ever had that was not all green.

The problem looks like some severe slug damage to me......or other insect like snails etc.

I will keep an eye out for them but have seen none so far in this bed, but they don't like to be out at the same time as I do. The damage in the photo was caused more by me, but still it could be slugs or snails also.

If a slug was eating the leaves it could destroy the natural growth pattern.
