That looks to be some species of Pachypodium. It is a succulent rather than a cactus.

Well, I guess the best way to describe it is that a succulent plant means they hold water more in than say a tropical plant (such as a 'Peace Lily').

This means they store water in their "bodies" (for a lack of a better word) and can go between waterings longer than than of a tropical plant. A lot of tropical plants grow where it is humid and rely on more frequent waterings to survive, whereas a succulent plant grows in areas where humidity and rainfall are less frequent (i.e. a the side of a mountain or in the desert).

Not to add to your confusion, but all cacti are succulents. However, not all succulents are cacti. To explain further, cacti are succulents, but they have spines (which are a type of modified leaf). Succulents that are not considered cacti, but just "succulents" have leaves.

Edited to say that there are spineless cacti. I know, confusing.

This is a picture of succulents for example

These are cacti

These are tropical plants. You see how their leaves are thin compared to the succulents? The succulents have thick, fleshy leaves designed to hold lots of water.

I hope this helps.

Agree with Hetty. Pachypodium lamerei, unless it is some sort of cross but I doubt it. AKA Madagascar palm, but it is NOT a palm. To confuse you further!!! Sticking tongue out

If it goes dormant (i.e. loses its leaves) don't water it too much. They like the sunshine. I have 4 different species of pachys and they are all in full sun and loving life.

I agree with Kate; however, in the growing season (summer) they can take plenty of water (as long as they are in well draining soil) and they will reward you with rapid growth.

I have it for 6 years. Friend had one, also in a pot, but very tall.
He made me a small transplant and this is how much it grew in six years.
We keep it indoors on a terrace that doesnt have much sun and we do not water it extensively.
Now that you people gave me right identification and advice I want to know more and how to improve its growth.
Thank You!

Hurray! !

Again, I agree with Hetty, I forgot to mention the watering during the active season....they grow really well here in FL so they put up with a lot of moisture during the summer! If you give it the right conditions, it may grow a fatter trunk and might even flower for you! The flowers are really nice.
