I never have any luck over wintering the Salvias that get woody. But I keep trying. Last year I planted Salvia greggii Wild Thing and Furman's Red. I have two Salvia x jamensis Heatwave Blaze and Heatwave Glimmer. All four plants looked wonderful going into winter. They all get good drainage. Right now none show any sign of life. They are all still firmly in the ground. I cut them back to about four inches.

Are they maybe just really late to come back? Is there some trick to over wintering them?

Jennifer,

You're waiting to cut them back in the Spring after the threat of freeze/frost has passed, aren't you?

I usually wait longer than "the threat has passed time-frame", since sometimes we get an unexpected frost/freeze that surprises everyone. Same thing for Agastaches.

Salvias seem to be late of showing life in the Spring, maybe they'll still leaf out.

I only just cut them back. I guess I'll just sit back and be patient. Thank you!

I hope they still show signs of life in the coming weeks. Smiling
