I have an Indian hawthorn that has been in my garden for 20+ years. Because of its sentimental value, I'd like to try to propagate it. What are my options for taking cuttings? I have had success with holly, hydrangea, elderberry, wiegela and am currently nursing along an oak leaf hydrangea cutting.

From what I have read the cuttings should be taken when the plant is dormant. Use rooting hormone and don't allow the cuttings to dry out or freeze over the winter months. Should be ready to plant in Spring.

greene - thanks for responding. I have since learned that I had the wrong ID for this shrub. Turned out to be flowering Japanese quince. I pruned it pretty hard when it finished blooming and am trying to root some of the pruned pieces. I won't let them go through winter outdoors but will keep them indoors.
