Can we start a Wish List for orchids we just saw and are on the search for?

I just saw a wonderful posting on FB of Dendrobium Rainbow Dance. I just HAVE to have it! I'm on the hunt! Found it at Ecuagenera, but would like to find a different clone.

I have been looking through our early threads from 2010, some still moved over from Cubits and I realize that in my hands quite a few beautiful species did well and then died a spectacular death, or they are languishing along. Yes, I still have lots of species growing fine as expected, but the oldest Orchids in my collection are Cattleyas and Vandas. I have been drooling over Jim's gorgeous Schoms, but that means a larger greenhouse and I also love love Roberta's First Ladies Cattleyas! And then there are all the pretty little Neofinetia crosses, oh my! I snap them up wherever I see them.
I never met an Orchid I didn't like, but I think my first love are Cattleyas, I think I need another Irene Finney or similar!

I need another Dendrobium lowii to replace the one I killed. And I might just need to try tobaense again. I found another vendor who carries it so maybe that will be the difference.

I like this thread too. Let's start with Schomburgkias:

Myrmecophila albopurpurea
Myc. Hamlyn's Melody 'Good Lookin'

Ursula, I think the Myrm. grandiflora may be a more compact grower.

Now I know for a fact that the albopurpurea is a really small plant, because I have it.

Oooo, I'll have to check my Mc/Schom seedlings. I think I have some that need new homes. I've been growing a lot from flask for several years as a learning experience and I'm not going to keep them.

My wish list starts with a greenhouse! But thinking about it, I really want a good Hardyana, among others!

Melissa, when I saw that dendrobium on fb, I immediately thought of you! That was breathtaking, I have never seen it.

Spend your energy towards a greenhouse.

Bert, there is a C. Hardyana semi-alba that will knock your socks off. That's a good one for the wish list.

Yes Jim, I want the semi-alba but finding the best one has been the journey. I've searched for several years because I want to see it in bloom. It's my ideal catt.

I'm growing this one from flask. Out of the flask, I have one strong seedling that is now 5 years old and probably 2-3 years from blooming.

Remakes can of course be with selective parents, I am very excited to see what blooms out of your flask group!

Cats are also my first love. Myrmecophila....are these plants that have special relationships with ants? "Ant plants" ?

Yes, Kate, those are the ant plants although more so in the wild than in my OC. The ants like to live in the hollow Pbulbs and as payback, protect the plant from bad bugs like aphids and scale. The Schomburgkias that do not have this ant relationship have been lumped in with the
Laelias.

I just came home from the Spring Garden show with a Bifrenaria harrisoniae and it was covered with ants within 10 minutes. Very sweet scent! If/when the blooms finish opening, I'll get a photo.

I just thought of one more that should be on my wish list.

Carol, I looked up your new orchid and see is is a synonym for Den. harrisoniae. I also found this interesting tidbit:

GROWING MEDIA: B. harrisoniae grows well mounted on slabs or rafts if
high humidity can be maintained and sufficient water can be provided.
Medium sized fir bark produces good results for most growers who use pots.
Successful growers suggest that these plants grow well in a potting mix
more like one used for Paphiopedilum than one used with Cattleya. They
further indicate that fir bark with a little coarse sphagnum and some
perlite added produce excellent results.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: Because these plants are intolerant of being
disturbed once established, repotting should be done only when necessary
and then only when new root growth is starting. When dividing, each
division should consist of 4-5 pseudobulbs. Growers report that they have
never found what initiates blooming, and that some plants never bloom.
Whether or not they were providing the conditions indicated above is not
known.
