I think it is most likely Chinese privet - Ligustrum sinense, yes.
Alabama and other states are also being invaded by
Japanese - L. japonicum and Glossy privet - L. lucidum.

There are eradication programs; folks can report the location of the plants. You can rip them out, or burn them, or spray them with nasty chemicals.

TY! Here goes, I'm reporting the location where I've seen it: EVERYWHERE between Andalusia & Dothan AL, and south from Pensacola to Port St. Joe FL, that's not mowed or otherwise kept free of it!

I have privet hedge in plain and variegated and it gets purple berries. But the flowers almost smell like honey, a good scent. Are there different privets? We've had it for over 20 years for privacy and it hasn't failed us and birds love it too.
