It was time. Time to clear out the overgrown little plot of land I use to stash woody plants inside my vegetable garden (where hungry critters can't get to them in wintertime). I had lost track of what was what, and I'm sure that birds contributed a few unwanted tenants as well. So all those shrubs went into pots this weekend, to be identified and either placed in a more appropriate location or tossed out. I'd appreciate your help figuring out what they are :-)
Here goes the first one: nice reddish bark, and tiny yellow flowering structures. No leaves yet as of today.

Maybe Cornus mas

Great suggestion, but I don't think it's quite right. For one, C. mas bloomed a month ago in our garden. And its flowers are more fully formed, compared to the incomplete ones on the sapling. But once the leaves emerge I should be able to determine for sure.

Spice bush or a relative?
I'm not very familiar with them but that flower head reminds me of it, but not the red bark.
Any scent if you scratch the bark or crush a leaf?

Thanks Swayback - I do believe you're right. Digging through my records, it turns out I planted a single seedling of Lindera benzoin in that nursery area back in 2007...

They are one of my favorite plants, they're being displaced rapidly by invasive species.
They're tough, reliable, spread at a reasonable rate, also edible and medicinal... Birds love the fruit.
When you walk through a patch, or just rub a leaf or stem, they smell wonderfully of citrus!
You can even rub yourself down with the leaves as a temporary bug repellant.
I'm sure if I did some real research I'd learn many more uses too.
I'm in the process of digging quite a few to spread around in hopes of establishing a few small stands of them.
