It had stopped raining by late evening so I managed to get a flash picture of my plant. My phone takes great pictures but I'm not sure I'm doing it the right way to take a night-time flash. If it's blooming again tomorrow, I'll try to take more.

That's beautiful, glad you had a chance to catch it in full bloom!

That is gorgeous! Hurray!
I have one of these plants in a pot for over 10, and maybe even 15, years and it has never bloomed! I didn't even know that they are supposed to bloom...so what am I doing wrong? Confused

Hi SarasotaPatty, Welcome! to All Things Plants!

Watch for these thorny protuberances and then the emerging buds and once you see buds forming, keep an eye out after dark for the flowers because the Ric Rac is a nocturnal bloomer. Some years my plant seems to have the buds for three months before they start to get fat in preparation for opening. The blooms usually begin to open around ten o'clock at night and sometimes they will still be open until 9:00 or so the next morning but they fade/wilt quickly the morning after the blooms open.

The plant is outside in a pot. I'll take a pic of it as soon as I have some time and post it. I have never seen those thorny little nubs...and I'm pretty aware of what goes on with most of my plants as I take a tour of my garden and 'inspect' just about every day when I go out to water my vanda's.
I can't get over it...those blooms are just gorgeous!

Patty, suggest you try moving the plant gradually out into a little more sunlight? Mine was growing well but not blooming in the shady spot where I had it hanging under an overhang. Now it's at the corner of the overhang where it's getting a good dose of morning sun.

I'm also spraying mine with the orchid Bloom Booster fertilizer that I've been using on my orchids in the springtime. I have some buds starting already, and I started my Ric Rac from a cutting about 2 years ago.

My plant never bloomed until I moved it to a location with more sunlight. Our Florida morning sun should be perfect but as Elaine suggested, it should be moved gradually to the higher light situation. I also recommend using orchid fertilizer. I've always been really lazy when it comes to feeding my plants but when I used orchid bloom-booster type plant food, it helped tremendously!

I've had it in shade, I've had it in less sun, I've had it in all day sun...I re-potted it about a year ago and put it in it's current location which is about half-day sun.....maybe the fertilizer is what's missing? Confused

I took this a little while ago....

Is this in a hanging basket ? Most of them seem to like that way best - at least mine do -- better air circulation.

It's NOT a hanging basket. I just put it on the ground about a year ago, when I re-potted it...prior to that it was on one of my 'step' shelves in the yard (lots of air around that). I guess when it gets cool enough to work in the yard again I will put it in a hanging basket, but I'll start fertilizing it now when I water. This is just amazing to me...all these years with that plant and I never even knew it was supposed to bloom!
Thanks Elfie, and everyone!!

They really don't need to be hanging, I've seen a couple of beauties trailing about on the ground and I think there's one in the rock garden and succulent area at Selby.

If I did that with mine, I'm sure it would bite me, though! Mine is hanging, and they do make really nice basket plants since they tend to trail downwards anyway. Mine is still pretty young and its trailing arms reach out and grab passers-by at times . . . Big Grin

They just do need really fast-draining medium and as Elfie said, lots of air movement in our humid weather is good. They feed more through the leaves than the roots, just like orchids. So I think spraying the fert is more effective than pouring it through the medium.

What's left of mine is still in it's original hanging basket but when we move next year, I'm going to try to find a spot where it can sit on the ground and trail ... hopefully in an area where I won't be working often Green Grin! so I won't come into contact with the thorns.
