An Essay from the Permaculture Research Institute.

To me this article "hit the nail on the head". So many "head banger" issues for me involve this paradigm of thinking:
I go to the doctor, and the next thing I know my aches, pains, and rashes are doled out in appointments to 5 other specialists.
Isn't there a medical doctor who understands that all the parts of a human being sort of work together as a complex system?

And then there's is planning how my yard is to serve me? At the garden centers I find: Dyed mulch, Knock Out roses, and grass seed. and miracle grow in several forms and irrelevant purposes. Now how am I going to make a food forest out of that? Should I just plant grass? And spend the rest of my life mowing it?

There are people who spend their whole lives as reductionists. Just give me the bottom line, they say. There are a few who know what the term "ecology" means. Those people are your friends. Complexity, not reductionism, is more likely to serve me.

Never was one much for grass. All that mowing and nothing to show for it. Would rather have, dandelions and all the other edible weeds mixed throughout. This spring, my yard's been gorgeous sprinkled all over throughout the grass with wild violets and dandelions in bloom. If I have my way, my yard would be turned into a pottage mini park with meandering paths. Hurray!

Violets. I have a lot of them this year that replaced grass, so Im letting them have their way. I just learned about allysum and nasturtiums being great companion plants. I remember the Santa Barbara botanic gardens. There was an eroded area where nasturtiums had taken over. Great idea. No grass. Other plants are so much more interesting.
