Here are some hosta dealers I have had good luck with.

In The Country Gardens and Gifts. Independence, Iowa

Dawn's Bloomers Independence, Iowa

Flying Frog Farm Indianola, Iowa

Dry Creek Hostas Marion, Iowa

The Hosta Leaf Colesburg, Iowa

Green Hill Farm Chapel Hill North Carolina

Naylor Creek Nursery Chimacum Washington

All of these dealers sell very nice hostas at a very reasonable price. With the exception of Hosta Leaf and Dry Creek Hostas all have websites and do will do mail order. These are by no means the only good ones around, they are just some that I have done business with.
Here is a start. Everyone else chime in with their good sources.

Hi, Gary
Thanks for posting that list. Some of my best were from the Foxfire Co-op. I heard they went out of business. Say its not so!

Hi Teresa
I am very sorry to say that they are no longer there. They had a large sale last fall to get rid of their stock. I think it was spread over a 2 week period. The first weekend, which was when DW and I made the trip, potted hostas were $10 and clumps $40. The second and final weekend the hostas were $5 for the potted ones and $20 or $25 for clumps. We literally filled the bed of our pickup. We were barely able to put the tarp back on. Everything was for sale with the exception of a few orders he still had to fill and his OS Foxfire Palm Sunday.

I will always choose a vendor who gives out a little something.

Oh, I don't know. Bonuses are nice, but if someone has something I want and I know the vendor and I know they send good disease free stuff I'll buy regardless of bonuses. A lot of times with small vendors they just can't afford to do bonuses and I don't hold that against them.

Have you ever done a co-op? I was wondering how Hallson's would do. I like mature plants.

I like mature plants too. I'm too old to wait 4 years to see anything grow to max. size.

Cheryl, there are enough good places to buy hostas around us here in Iowa that there is no need to do mail order unless you're looking for cutting edge hostas. (see Gary's list above) And if that is the case, then Naylor Creek is a trustworthy place to buy from. There are a few other places that I'd mail order from, but very few. Smiling

I did get some mail order hostas about a week ago from Made in the Shade Gardens. They were very healthy plants, shipped bare root. Great root systems on these babies, so when I planted them they just took off. I was very pleased with the communication and the service.

That said, I'm looking to get a lot of my hostas from members of the hosta society I belong to. Among them are Jeff Miller from Land of the Giants who has a great listing of available plants.

It is a shame that Foxfire is gone. Just as I was really getting into hostas...they went out of business. And I didn't have the money at the time, or the prepared beds, to take advantage of the closeout sale they had. Sad
Check out Petiole Junction, my garden blog! (I'd love your comments.)
