Could this be a Callophrys lanoraieensis , the bog elfin. It was a very tiny butterfly.

Elfin for sure....I'm not sure what else you have in your area but it does not look like a Bog to me. I would say it looks like a Eastern Pine Elfin - Callophrys niphon. (yours has the two dark marks on the lower portion of the fore wing and the markings on the back of the hindwing are very distinct where they would be diffused on the Bog...some guides have little arrows pointing to the differentiating features....) Nice find! Rarely seen but the timing is right.

Thanks Brenda I really couldn't find the right one and a piece of it wing is missing so I took a guess, of course it was wrong. I really appreciate the info.

It is an obsession with me, and now part of my job so I gotta be able to ID them. A good field guide goes a long way, I am loving the ROM's "Butterflies of Ontario", it has the handy arrows to show what to look for (which can be the difference between utter confusion and an identification) but one for your region is maybe better? Kaufman is good.

Brenda, what is your job and why does it require knowing butterflies? I'm intrigued!

Brenda VR can I pick your brain a bit. Today as I took pictures I found in my yard these butterflies with an unknown. Probably a bug. 1. Summer Azure, 2. Question Mark 3. Red-spotted Purple 4. Red-spotted Admiral and 5 THIS black and white sort-of butterfly??? Can you help me out.

I'm not Brenda, but I'm going to throw my two cents in. I think that's a Comma and not a Question Mark, but I will defer to those who see them more often than I. I think the last one is a moth. Reminds me a bit of the Eight-Spotted Forester Moth I saw one time. Maybe a relative? Hey, I see Linda agreed with me while I was typing.
