Last year I grew out several seedlings from a Sedum seed mix called 'Rock Garden Blend'. I planted the remainder of the seed this spring, and have several more seedlings just getting a good start. The description of the mix promised several different low-growing types and colors, and I was hoping for a good assortment I could use as "green mulch", both in planters and around larger plants in the ground.

Of last years seedlings, some were reminiscent of S. spurium, but had two different growth habits:



There are two of the type on the left, with tight rosettes, and three of the type on the right, with somewhat more open growth where the leaves appear "stacked" from bottom to top. Here's a close-up comparison of the two types:



A second type of seedling has round-ended, club-shaped leaves:



There was a third type that reminds me of 'Blue Spruce' and similar clones. There are two seed-grown plants of this type:



I had considered them identical and planted them side-by-side as a foil for the bright-colored 'Florida Friendly Gold' they were planted next to. (The yellow stems and flowers at the bottom of the one pic are from 'FFG'). But when I was taking these photos, I realized the one was an even grey-green, while the other had a decided bluish cast with pinkish highlights. Here's a close-up comparison:

As far as ID's, I have no clue.

I'm anxious to see how they develop this year and how well they handle SW Florida's heat and humidity. Certainly I have no shortage of well-drained soil, even with our heavy rains!

How fun is that to get all those different Sedums!

Those are really cool Ron! And I like your explanations...you're tempting me to try seeds - even though I'm not really great with seedlings!

Julia, it has been interesting. But now I'm in danger of becoming a Sedum junkie. But when I see photos people post of what's available in their local nurseries and even big box stores, it makes me wonder. The Ogon, Sea Urchin, and Florida Friendly Gold are all I've seen available here, so a lot of the really exciting clones might not survive our hot, wet summers. Too slow-growing to be useful as cool-season annuals!

Greg, I've had a lot of experience over the years, but I'm surely no expert. It has been quite a mixed bag, and I've certainly killed more seed than I've "hatched"! Just look at all the Sedum seedlings I've killed. Here's a photo of last year's seedlings:



So disappointing that with all that to start with, I ended up after damp-off, etc., with only eight plants. My bad! Lots fewer seedlings this year, but with a bit of experience behind me, I hope to end up with more than eight new plants.

So, all I can say is... Go for it!

Sprinkle cinnamon on your seedlings, will stop damp-off over night..

I agree, cinnamon works well. So does chamomile tea, which I try to keep on hand in a spray bottle when mass-planting seed. Unfortunately I was away for the weekend when it hit.

The real problem was soil that held too much moisture and lack of protection from rain. I live, I plant, I make mistakes. I learn. I make more mistakes. I keep learning!

So true about making mistakes.

I just never seem to be able to keep the seedlings happy, either too dry or too damp. I do fine with veggie seedlings so maybe it is pots that I have a problem with this may be my year to try...I have semp seed that I want to try too

Wonderful photos Ron. The S. rupestre type are very interesting. Since the plants are from seed there is now telling what you have.
The one on the right is very interesting. You could possible come up with a new sedum.

Ron, my Blue Spruce has similar coloring like that this time of year. I like it best at this stage.

Since Blue Spruce is so widespread, I'm now wondering if it might have been the seed parent for this type seedling in the mix.

Can't remember. Getting ready to give it a good haircut because it's getting lanky. It then greens back up.

@Ron now the end of May and it's still looking like the photo. Put one pot into a hanging pot just to see how long the stems would get. I have plenty planted in different places.

Not much change on mine, either, Linda. But then, they haven't grown either. Our summer rainy season has started for those in some areas nearby, but not yet for me. Hot and breezy but so far very little rain. Won't be long, though.
