A friend of mine called this morning asking about how to plant brussel sprout bulbs. Bulbs? I always thought they were grown from seed. Am I confused or is she?

Brussels are just a confused cabbage. You can start from seeds or buy plants . Grow the same as a long season cabbage and they do take a long season 90-120 days.

She said these were bulbs. Another friend gave them to her, saying they were brussel sprout bulbs and that she should plant them. And he was munching on them! She said they smell kind of like cabbage, but didn't look like brussel sprouts. Sort of brown colored, too. (She drives me crazy, asking me to identify plants, sight unseen. Sighing! )

Someone must be playing a joke on her. They grow from seed, as has been explained already, and there is no such thing as a bulb for Brussels Sprouts (named for Brussels, Belgium).

Thank you! I wonder what they really are? Heh, she planted them in one of her raised beds. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, comes up. Green Grin!

Hey, I wonder if what he gave her are seed pods from brussel sprouts? Anyone got a pic of what those look like?

I've always grown brussels sprouts from seed as well. I think "bulbs" are just someone either mis-informed, or playing a joke Confused

I think the person who gave her the "bulbs" is misinformed (he is something of a self-styled expert on everything), not playing a joke...unless they turn out to be something hallucinogenic! Now THAT would not surprise me. Hilarious!
I do wonder what they might be though. Wish she had taken some photos.
Thanks for all the info. I was pretty sure I'd only seen reference to them being grown from seed, but wasn't 100% sure.

Woofie, I hope whatever they were will grow into something and you can let us know what it is... I'm all ears! Hilarious!

Well, they are at least edible. Um, that is, if the guy shows up next month to trim our pony's feet, we'll know they aren't deadly poisonous. Whistling

Hey, she did say he was munching on them! And he's our farrier...so far. Hilarious!

Oh, I keep forgetting to thank Pirl for pointing out that it's Brussels Sprouts, not Brussel Sprouts. Even though that's harder to say.

Once some people were discussing some tiny seeds that had spilled into the shipping box during a Round Robin, and I think someone decided to grow them out just to see what they were.

It gave me the idea of sprinkling a little ground black pepper into the box when it went past me. No one would be able to identify those "small, black, irregularly shaped seeds" and someone would eventually try to grow them out.

I wonder how many kinds of stratification they would have tried before giving up?

Fortunately, I recovered from that evil temptation before the box reached me.

I like the idea that the "bulb" was really a seed pod. I know that unripe radish seed pods are very tasty, but I never tried to grow (or eat) a Brussels Sprout.

the pods seem to be just skinny little structures like those of broccoli, maybe a couple of inches long... https://www.google.com/?gws_rd...

I can't see how anyone would have been munching on one of these and giving the impression that it was a "bulb" of any sort...

Maybe he was just munching on a Brussels sprout??
