Hello, Rose folks! I don't grow roses, but I like looking at them. Smelling them, too. The Tampa Rose Society was having their annual show on Saturday so I took lots of pictures to share. I also took Mom and then we ate at Red Lobster. Yum! FYI, I went to a Daylily show the weekend before and did a thread for them, so I figure you guys deserve one, too.

The show was at a local mall outside J.C. Penney's and it made me remember why I don't go to the mall. Parking was a nightmare! But we made it in. I've uploaded as many pictures as I could to the database, but there were some I couldn't find. I'll try to note those and if one of the Admins, Moderators, or members wants to add it and import my photo, feel free! Or, if it's spelled wrong, let me know and I'll search for it again. There are a few repeats in here, but lots of variety. I noticed some of the pictures I uploaded were the first photo of that variety, so maybe you'll see something new! (FYI, did you know if you add the first photo of a plant to the database you get two acorns instead of one? So add some pictures!) Now, let's get to the pictures! Keep in mind this was mall lighting. There was some natural light coming in, but not a lot so color could be a little off.

Fitzhugh's Diamond (couldn't find this in the database)

Joy (we're going to see a few more of these)

Flawless (and now I have the Beyonce song in my head) Hilarious!

First Choice (added the first photo to the database, we'll see a better one later)

Baldo Villegas (not in database)

Crystal Palace (first photo!)

Robin Alonso (not in database)

Voluptuous (We're going to see this one a few times. I noticed on the tags they always put an exclamation point behind the word. But it's the same cultivar, right? It looks the same so I posted the photos in the database. Tell me if I was wrong.)

Pope John Paul II (This one is really popular, huh?)

Sheer Bliss

Mr. Caleb (not in database)

Marilyn Wellan (first photo!)

Let Freedom Ring (also popular)

Louise Estes (another popular one)

Double Delight

Chicago Peace (also popular)

Raphaela (not in database)

Hot Cocoa

Gartendirektor Otto Linne (what a name!)

Double Delight (yeah, this one is popular, too)

Red Intuition (Hands down, my favorite.) Thumbs up

Now, the next section is arrangements. Some of them included multiple names so I couldn't add them to the database. So you only get to see them here!

'In the Garden' and 'Magic Show'

Vista (only one variety here)

'Granada' with Firecracker Fern in background

'Veteran's Honor' and 'Big Ben'

Thumb of 2015-05-11/mellielong/3598bc

'Pope John Paul II' with Magnolia leaves

Okay, back to single flowers now.

White Success (not in database)

Anna's Promise (I read in the comments that this is based on a "Downton Abbey character. It's a popular show and a popular rose!)

We have a couple of multi-color bunches ahead.

'Just Joey', 'Tropicana', 'Paradise'

Thumb of 2015-05-11/mellielong/e8ef14

'Oregold', 'Olympiad', 'Paradise' (hope I read that right)

Thumb of 2015-05-11/mellielong/e533df

Scentimental (there were three of these at the show and only one had the name spelled right)

Melody Parfumee (they misspelled this one, too)

Over the Moon

Voluptuous (this tag didn't have the exclamation point, hmm...)

Scentimental

Night Out (not in database)

Outta the Blue

Thumb of 2015-05-11/mellielong/f54658

These were both called 'The Fairy' but I only added the second one to the database because the first one didn't look like a double.

Thumb of 2015-05-11/mellielong/2cf3f2

Gemini

Affirm (first photos!)

Big Ben (first photo!)

Big Red (not in database)

Cesar E. Chavez

David's Love (not in database)

My Lady Barbara (not in database, I see a Lady Barbara but the description doesn't match)

Sun Goddess

Marlon's Day (not in database, is the spelling right?)

Mr. Caleb

Okay, the computer just froze and I had to restart and thank goodness Chrome saved most of what I had posted. But I'm going to post this right now and continue in another post so I don't lose it again!

Okay, I've taken deep breaths and calmed down. Hopefully, you guys are seeing some new stuff and what's popular in Florida roses. Let's keep going!

Rafaela (spelled with an "f" not a "ph" but I still can't find it in the database)

Anna's Promise (told you it was popular)

Gemini (we've seen a lot of these, too)

Voluptuous

Marijke Koopman (first photo!)

Lady of the Dawn

Okay, until I say otherwise, the next ones are winners. They had them on a table behind a velvet rope (not kidding) so I had to zoom in on a few.

Miss All-American Beauty

Thumb of 2015-05-11/mellielong/d5b497

Beloved (The 'Beloved' in the plant database says it's a white flower but I see this is a synonym for Cesar E. Chavez which is red. I didn't post this to the database because of the uncertainty.)

Rockin' Robin

Fourth of July

Francis Dubreuil

Melody Parfumee

Elina

Chicago Peace

Veteran's Honor (this one seemed to win the title of Princess)

Louise Estes (won Royal Court)

St. Patrick (also Royal Court)

Joann Edwards (Royal Court, too)

Walking on Sunshine

Zack Nobles (not in database, it's not the person who entered it because they wrote their name lower on the tag)

Our Lady of Guadalupe (this won the Fermin Rodriguez award which involves a big trophy with each year's winner listed on it)

Those were all the winners I could photograph without hopping the rope. I really don't want to get taken down by a mall cop. If I get taken down, I want the CIA or at least a SWAT team. The final group were some they had sitting on a table where you could sniff and chat with a member of the society. He asked if I grew roses and I told him, "No, I'm a butterfly gardener. I'm just here to take pictures." I think I made him sad.

Scentimental

Francis Dubreuil

Edith Schurr

Chrysler Imperial

Fragrant Cloud

Well, that's the show! Hope you enjoyed it and learned something or saw something new. Maybe some of you Southerners can see what varieties grow in this awful heat and humidity! And for those of you who enter your roses into shows, maybe this will give you a heads up on what varieties or "looks" tend to win! And for those of you who don't have rose shows where you live, I hope you enjoyed going on a virtual tour with me!

Gorgeous blooms Melanie! I love roses, I had several of them but they usually die under my care after 2 to 3 growing spectacular growing season. Now I'm left with just a few. Thanks for sharing them, I enjoyed browsing the pics.

Melanie, thank you so much! I love all of the photos you've been adding to the database and I was wondering whether you had taken photos of roses for which we don't have entries. I was going to send you a tree-mail to ask, but now I see this stunning thread and find that you did photograph roses that are missing from our database. I'll create entries for the missing ones and import your photos to those entries sometime today. In the future, though, please don't hesitate to propose the addition of a new rose to the database. You only have to fill in the genus (Rosa) and the cultivar name when you propose that a rose be added.

Glad everyone is enjoying the show! And thanks Zuzu, I've never added a plant to the database so I was a little nervous about doing it myself.

I've added all the ones that were missing, except for Rafaela, which had to be a misspelling of Raphaela. A couple of others had minor misspellings (Eddie Edwards and Zach Nobles). In the Garden is not a rose name, so I imported that "combination" photo to Magic Show. Tin Can Derby, unfortunately, is not the name of a rose. It's the name of one of the rose show's competition categories (three sprays of shrub or OGR), so I'm importing those two lovely photos to the main Rosa page. Maybe they can be identified at a later date. And, yes, you're right: Voluptuous! should have an exclamation mark, so I added it to the entry. Smiling

Cool, glad we got everything added and straightened out and corrected. And interesting to know that exclamation point wasn't something they just made up. Hilarious!

Wonderful thread and thanks so much for taking the time to first take the pictures, and then post them here on a thread and into the database! I tip my hat to you.

What a great show! So many beauties. It is interesting to see that the top roses really do perform well in different areas of the country.
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.

Glad you all are enjoying the show! I did wonder about the varieties people were growing in Florida. I know we have a lot of problems with black mold, I think it's called. Our humidity is just so high. A lot of people grow Knockout Roses, but I don't see a lot of people who grow other kinds. I volunteer at the Museum of Science and Industry in the butterfly exhibit. We also have a Historic Tree Grove where each tree is related to or a descendant of a tree that a famous person owned. For example, we have a Magnolia from Juliette Gordon Low (founder of the Girl Scouts). And my boss planted some roses underneath the tree. There are the Knockout Roses, but I know we also have the varieties 'Joseph's Coat' and 'Don Juan'. So it can be done in Florida, but it probably takes a little more work than in other areas.

I think the problem in many parts of Florida is the root-knot nematode. This nematode usually kills own-root roses within their first year in the garden and roses grafted onto Dr. Huey within their first three years. The only solutions are to grow roses in containers or to plant only roses grafted onto fortuniana rootstock. I noticed that most of your photos are of miniature roses, which can be grown successfully in containers, and roses introduced by K&M Nursery, which only uses fortuniana as its rootstock.
