I found out not too long ago that you get two acorns instead of one when you upload the first picture of a plant to the database. I thought it was nice, and it's a good incentive to get people to add pictures to plants that don't have them yet.

Recently, I was at USF Botanical Gardens and took pictures of a plant I didn't know. I posted it on the plant ID forum and someone quickly identified it. Then, another user imported the pictures into the database which was fine. But I noticed that even though mine were the first pictures, I only got one acorn for the first photo. I didn't know if this was intentional or not so I thought I'd ask. I would just be afraid of it leading to hard feelings if someone felt like they wanted to upload it first and someone else imported the picture before they got to it. I have more acorns than a squirrel in winter so it was fine, but I just wanted to let you know that the site does that in case that's not what you intended to happen. This happened to me too; if it is imported from a place on ATP already, the system gives you only one acorn.

@Dave should be able to answer this.

It's true, the import tool does not look at whether it's the first image or not. I should update that and make it conform to the usual bonus. In the meantime, I'll give you a few acorns to make it up.

Okay, I looked into this and found that indeed, it has been giving double acorns the whole time (when appropriate) but the system message incorrectly omitted that information, always saying you got "an acorn" even when sometimes you got double acorns. So rest assured that nobody got the wrong number ever.

I have updated it to give the right system message starting now.

Cool! Zuzu is currently importing the roses (that weren't in the database) I took pictures of at the Tampa Rose Society show and the first two gave the message I only received one acorn but she just did one and it says two acorns so you definitely fixed it! Though, I'm glad to know everyone was getting the right amount of acorns to begin with.

To further set your mind at ease, I do log almost every action on the site that involved acorns so I checked your record, @mellielong.

May 3rd you had an image import that gave you double acorns. Today you had 5 that gave double acorns. The only error was the system message said the wrong number was given.

Ooh, it's all technical! Thanks Dave! I'm glad you got the message fixed so everyone can be clear now. We need those acorns to buy badges and enter Not-A-Raffles!

AND because it's great fun to give acorns to other people for things they suggested that you think is a great suggestion, because you know they could use the acorns, they wrote an article you think deserves an acorn tip, they ID'd a plant for you, they posted a photo you think is exceptional, and about a million other reasons.

I think that identifying plants is a particularly valuable thing to do for people.

Knowing the correct identification lets you look up the entire world's cumulative knowledge about that plant, and try relatives. It gives clues about things you might change or test in the plant's care.

Or, perhaps, knowing its relatives allows some people to avoid any closely related plant ever again, if it was a thug or had other undesirable traits.!
