I just lost a Harry Lauder Walking Stick to that disease they are susceptible to (forget the name). Anyway, it is toast and on the burn pile. I am looking to replace with something less prone to disease that will also provide winter interest on my back deck. Either evergreen or interesting branching. The deck has southwest exposure, in full sun, with the prevailing wind also coming from the west. I am in Zone 8 of the Pacific NW, fairly mild winters with freezing but usually not very much snow. Warm summers, not too hot. Lots of rain. Any suggestions?

What a sad loss for you. I hope you find something suitable for your area, which I am not familiar growing in. Can you plant another?

I could plant another Harry, but I think they are rather plagued with (just looked it up) eastern filbert blight. My son has a nice large Harry and his has the same problem, is slowly dying from the top down. We both got ours from reputable local nurseries, might be something about our dampness. Since these can be on the spendy side, I'd rather find a replacement that is better suited to my area.

Hey what did you ever decide? I'm looking to add a few evergreen containers to my sunny deck. Have a nice start of sea green juniper that friend gave me. Don't want to spend a lot and was thinking of taking cuttings or digging up a nandina that has been crowded out of its place in my yard. Never seen them in containers. Zone 7b. also open to other ideas.

I never did anything with this planter, thanks for the reminder. It's just sitting in my pot room empty. My latest thought is something with good fall color and interesting branch structure - maybe a sumac. I'll have to revisit my local nursery once the leaves start turning.
