It's been a slow start, but most of my hostas are now unfurled. Most are back too, but a few that were struggling last year didn't make it through the winter. I've got a few more that are struggling now and I'm dealing with increased sun from the loss of a 45 yr-old ash tree (Emerald Ash Borer damage).

I've already moved a couple of hostas around because of the difference in sun and am carefully watching the others that are now in full sun. The majority of my hostas were not badly affected by the loss of this tree, but many in the neighbourhood have gone which increases general sunniness.

Here are a few pictures taken yesterday.

ViolaAnn,

Beautiful pics, as usual! Was that your big tree in your front yard that you lost? If so, that will be hard on your beautiful hosta bed you have.

Rose, fortunately, it was in the narrow strip of land between my driveway and my next door neighbour's driveway. It was a tree that the original next door neighbour tagged in the bush in 1971. He and my husband went, dug it out and dragged it home in the neighbour's station wagon and planted it squarely on the lot line (much to the chagrin of my present next door neighbour who hated the "messy" tree and also had to share in the cost of its removal). It towered over the house and as it was SW of the house, it was an important shade tree for us, but most of my hostas are shaded by other trees or by the house. I'm presently studying the situation on my front lawn as it does have more sun from the west now than it used to. The entire neighbourhood is much sunnier now as there were many original ash trees left when the houses were built in 1968-69. All gone to the Emerald Ash Borer. We tried - treated that tree twice, but it didn't work. maybe I'll be able to grow heirloom tomatoes. Rolling my eyes.

This is the tree we took down - the one in the middle. But the neighbour's tree also had to come down.

Sad to lose a big shade tree. I think the ash bore has invaded most of the US, too.
