Hi All!!
I'm a novice Gardner but have managed to plant some lovely day lillies that have returned 3years...yesterday i noticed that the leaves that are growing have these strange spots on them...alll of the sudden!!! I'm in Chicago and the weather has been fluctuating like crazy....anybody know what I should do to help my day lillies? ???

almost looks like they where sprayed with something.

it does look like they've been sprayed. How many daylilies are affected and are they all adjacent to each other?

[I can't imagine what could have been sprayed on them....I only water and use miracle gro plant food...There are 2 plants affected. An annual pot of petunias sits between them. ..One lilies has it bad and the other just a little..

I've never seen anything like that! Looks like paint or something to me. Maybe something fell from a plane? That is just weird!

I actually thought paint too, since it looks like there's splotches of white on the dark mulch as well...

Are there power lines right over the top of these daylilies? Or maybe a tree branch? Could it be bird droppings? Maybe from a pterodactyl?

Chelle, I saw that spot on the mulch too, which made me think it is paint or something. It isn't just on the plant, so I don't think it is something that is attacking the plant.

Is there anything similar on the petunia between the affected daylilies? Could someone have thrown out a cleaning product or something, or used a watering can for some other purpose? Are they located where drips from a roof would land on them?

leaf burn...? from overhead watering with chemical fertilizer perhaps...?

Thanks all for your feedback. ....I can make any sense of what's happened to them...no stray dog...neighbors treatments. ..they don't take care of their yard. ..pterodactyl. ..that's just funny....thanks gang...

I wouldn't dig them up just yet. at best I would maybe cut back the foliage some. we cut our down a tab bit when they get raggedy, doesn't phase them. then allow it to bloom. see what happens...

I wouldn't dig them up, since I've never seen anything like it before. I'd be curious to see what happens, and if they bloom normally. Weather shouldn't do that, but if it did, it would seem logical that everything in the yard would be covered in weird stuff. Please keep us posted!

If it doesn't wash off? I dunno. It doesn't look like fertilizer burn or anything I've seen (on daylilies) before. I've seen turf grass with various molds that are similar but so far as I know they don't affect other grassy perennials. I don't have my books handy, Google is good but the books would make Google better.

Yes please keep us posted! I am a new dl grower (VERY garden-variety, nothing fancy, just new to it) and I am fascinated and would be really dismayed if my new plants developed such symptoms. I agree though, since no one is recognizing a dire infection or whatever, I would not dig them up. See if the new foliage that arrives in time is free of this, too. *mystery ghost spray*
