Thread OP

Hi

My name is Diane and I live in Adelaide, South Australia. We are heading towards Winter Down Under, its getting cold and wet, cold I'm not keen on but the the rain is good, the rainwater tanks are filling nicely, they will see the garden through the hot dry Summers we get here. Last Summer we had several heatwaves of 43C (109F) lasting for several weeks.

Brand new to this forum and only 3 weeks into growing Adeniums.

Growing from seed as a trial to see if I can grow them successfully before getting any named varieties.
Bought 50 seed, gave 10 to a friend (safety in numbers if she gets a good one..lol) planted 40 and about 31 have sprouted.
Growing them in a heated propagation unit.
Had to soak and tease the seed heads off a couple once I read they can get stuck, possibly lost a couple because of my fiddling with them taking off the seed caps.
Also have one white seedling, I know this wont last long but decided to give it the benefit of the doubt...it not costing me anything to let it do its thing.

Just bought the book Adenium: Sculptural Elegance, Floral Extravagance by Dr Mark Dimmett, Gene Joseph, David Palzkill, a great read, with stunning photos.
So despite me saying its a trial, with the purchase of the book it seems I have already decided to continue with Adeniums!

I have been growing Clivia for about 4 years mainly from seed so hopefully the coming Spring will see at least some of my plants flower for the first time.
Ive also got some Frangipanni and some Hippie seedlings growing so I have plenty to keep me going over Winter.

Looking forward to reading everyone's posts.

Regards
Diane

Welcome!
I don't see many posters here at night. Lucky for you I am a Night Person to match your time zone. Welcome!

I have 5 adenium and 1 Junior that is about 4" tall, trying hard to grow big and strong. The Junior has new leaves but hasn't grown in the couple years that I have had it. I have forgotten what color it is!

I have a large pot of clivia. A single plant was given to me by my Mother-In-Law about 20 years ago. I know it likes to be pot bound but I think it is so tight in the pot it is bordering on the ridiculous! I will need a chain saw to get it out of the pot, that is IF I can get it out of the iron pot-holder. I did plant a seed and it grew up. It is a sloooooow grower (like adenium). Both have taught me patience.

Welcome! Diane56. it's always nice to have growers from other regions here; we can keep each other entertained with pictures while we wait for our own!
Here is a little eye candy for you.

Well, Hi, there, Diane. I'm Melissa from the Yahoo group. Glad to welcome you! Welcome!

Wow, that's HOT!! I've seen 39 degree heat and every degree at that 'elevation' is more torture! I think you should try growing arabicums, rather than the usual obesums. OK, in plain English, arabicums are from Arabia, and can take a lot more heat than most other Adeniums. I forgot to bring in two trays of seedlings once. They were covered with plastic, and boiled in 36 degree (97f) sun on my deck. Poor things! The obesums melted, really, but the arabicums were just fine.

That book is super wonderful, isn't it? I still spend time reading even though I have it memorized by now.

So, how ccccccold does it get in Adelaide?

Hi Diane, I live in Canada on the west coast, Vancouver Island. We are in Zone 7b - 8a., so we do not see the temps. you do. Are summers can be 80 -90 F. My Adeniums live indoors from
October - April.
You are fortunate to live in a climate where you can grow them all year round outside.
Sandy & Cheryl from Australia on the Adenium group that I have belonged to for quite a few years now have marvelous plants and so many others there growing beautiful plants.
They have produced some real beauties and with importing plants into Australia being negletable, growing from seed or getting from people such as Sandy is the easiest.
Looking forward to seeing your plants as they grow.

Welcome! Diane, I only have 3 adeniums and I have not tried growing from seed yet. I had a seedpod, which I thought had viable seeds but nothing grew. Now my very first adenium, one year old is busy making seedpods again. So maybe I will try to grow them from seeds.

Thanks Kadie, by the way I am not sure what a viable seed look like *Blush* the ones I saw from my seedpods were super tiny with feather like fuzz.

That is what they look like, Gigi. About a quarter of an inch stalk looking thingie with a fuzzy propeller at the end. About the thickness of a toothpick.

Thanks Hetty, good to know, I was expecting it to look like plummie seeds. We'll it did open up before I was able to get to it so I only had 4 viable seeds left. Nothing came out of it.

Next time I'm prepared.

"viable - capable of life or normal growth and development; "viable seeds"; "a viable fetus"
I don't think you could "see" good viability. You could see bad seeds when they turn black or mushy, or some other unhealthy look. But then, I don't have experience with adenium seedpods, only what I've learned online: the hairs need to be removed from seeds before planting. If you had removed them before planting, then Shrug! Also, if you planted in good seedling media and kept moist, then again, Shrug!
Also, viability has to do with age of the seeds--freshly harvested has a super high chance of germinating. But there are other factors to consider as well, and these involve pollination and such. Whistling
Only my two cents worth. Smiling
-Kadie
(p.s.) Just before maturing, tie or put a piece of nylon stocking over the seedpod to keep seeds from blowing away.

Thanks Kadie, I think I planted everything including the hairs *Blush* maybe that's why none survived. I will be sure to put a nylon stocking over the seeds this time.

Gigi, I planted my seeds with "wind dispersers"/propellers at the ends attached. They germinated just fine!

That's good to know Ursula. I have several seedpods, hopefully they will yield good seeds for me. It was next to my pink and red adenium.
