I made that badge a long time ago and awarded it at that time to those few who had been fairly prolific posters in that forum. Since then I haven't revisited it, until today. It works based on thumbs received. The most thumbed posters in the Plant ID forum (thumbs given to their posts inside that specific forum) get the badge.

I feel the same way Donald. It seems like I'm asking for ID's far more than I've ever ID'd.

I got one, too! Very excited! Thanks! Hurray!

Not only is it fun to share and help people out on the Plant ID Forum but, like I've mentioned before, it's also a bit like playing a game of botanical JEOPARDY! Hilarious! (which is entertaining to my geeky little self. Green Grin! ) Gotta challenge those brain cells!

I also really like the Plant ID threads, like many of bonitin's, where I'm exposed to really obscure plants that I've never seen before. Overall, it's just a great forum! Lovey dubby

Well, here's a funny coincidence. The very next episode of 'JEOPARDY!' aired after I made my post about it contained a big botanical error in ones of the clues.

In the "South Dakota" category, the person in the video clue said "All-natural soap made right here in South Dakota with Salvia officinalis, this native aromatic herb that wise men know grows wild on the prairie" while holding up a dried plant. Obviously, Salvia officinalis isn't native to the South Dakota prairie since it is actually native to the Mediterranean area (not even on the right continent, silly clue writers!) The native "sages" of that area used as herbs are species of Artemisia which aren't even in the same family as Salvias. Rolling my eyes.

Has anyone else noticed how ridiculously bad American (USA) television is at getting their botanical references correct? I'm always noticing obvious errors, even in gardening shows like 'Garden Smart' and such. It seems odd that with on-staff fact checkers and the resources of the internet that so many errors should find their way into the final product. However, I'm usually pleasantly surprised when I watch shows produced in the UK (including dramas, mysteries, etc) because they usually have their botanical facts straight.

Perhaps we need to market our collective skills as botanical fact checkers for the television industry. Hilarious!

I saw a case of this recently. Important evidence was discovered in an episode of "Backstrom" when one of their "experts" identified the bouquet of roses delivered to the murder victim as Ebb Tide, which he called a "rare varietal, available only in a few specialty shops." There's nothing "rare" about Ebb Tide. Hilarious!

Zuzu,
Not being familiar with it, I had to google 'Ebb Tide'. Well, the very first result was a link for Michigan Bulb. If Michigan Bulb is selling it then it surely isn't a rare variety! However, if you managed to get a correctly labeled and LIVING plant from Michigan Bulb, then that would be rare indeed! Hilarious!

There is a group called Botanical Accuracy that fights for this very thing. Like when an image of the wrong plant appears on herbal tea, etc.
