You know - like that old Energizer bunny! Something that just keeps on going and going and going! That what this has done with blooms. I bought it at the end of April in 2014 already in bloom. I paid $20 which made me cringe, but I was looking for something that might appeal to hummingbirds and this was all I saw. I figured it would bloom briefly and then I'd manage to kill it. I'd only seen Mandevillas in garden centers. Well, I put it in a slightly larger pot and it didn't blink and it bloomed continuously until I brought it inside last October. Winter isn't a kinder, gentler time for my plants. Inadequate storage conditions and woefully inadequate care takes a toll here, but this thing just rested and turned loose of some of its leaves. I put it in a considerably large container and started putting it back outside at the end of March. Here are two views taken seconds apart. I think the flash photo just shows how many buds are coming along better, but the other is perhaps better at reflecting what the eye sees. It has to be a generic Mandevilla because it had no tag at all when I bought it. It probably would like a trellis because I have to unwind some new twining growth all the time until it gets heavy enough to stay down.

Yes. Tough is the right word. How come I never heard that about them all those years?

The funny thing though with cuttings, my red one will root if you show it dirt. The pink one won't root for love or money. I don't get that.

I haven't tried propagation. If I were trying that, I'd probably just cut it apart.

I have one that's been in the same hanging pot for 5 or 6 years. I did take it out and root prune a couple of years ago, but it sure isn't as full as yours after all this time. They really are tough though. Here they stay out year round, and do lose some leaves, but always recover.

I've never root pruned a plant. I've taken them out and only repotted a portion, but I've never cut down the roots and then put the whole plant back in with new soil. I really have to try that sometime. I can't handle a hanging pot much larger than this. They get too heavy. The one in the photo is 15" in diameter. I don't think I could manage it hanging if it were clay, which is my usual preference for a container. It's heavy with just the resin container.

Mine is in the typical 12" resin pot, and it really is root bound. I should really either root prune again, or just replace it, but it keeps on blooming, no matter what. I don't know if regular pruning would help or hurt it. I haven't tried that.

Root pruning sounds scarier than it actually is and it's amazing how it will rejuvenate a declining plant.

I think the Mandevilla must get root bound pretty fast. I put it in a larger pot when I bought it and that root mass was like a spongy cork. When I upsized the pot this year, it was like that again. It had taken up the extra space with roots in less than a year.

That's really cool I like mandevilia's but they are a tropical and I have a ban on indoor plants.
