Almost 30 years ago I purchased 6 (1 gallon) containers of a tagged, blooming daylily from a very reputable local nursery. The tags were stapled to the containers and were printed tags with color photos.

The DL was named Dragon Lore and the tag stated that the plant was "an evergreen in warmer climates: blooms late Spring on 22-24 in stalks with 3 to 7 blooms per stalk. repeat blooms until frost. Cut back foliage in mid-summer to 6-8 inches for a tidy healthy plant: grow in full sun: color does not fade"

This is what the bloom looks like, and has not changed in all this time...(the color is true to the flower) The petals have an iridescence to them in sunlight. Can anyone here shed some light on who this may be? (since I have been unable to document, I have been calling it "little black dragon NOID'.

This very pretty daylily does not match any current description/picture I can find for that name.

Thanks for your help,
Jean

Hi Mary.

This little dragon Noid kinda looks like your avatar, Big Grin What is that one named? The throat on this one is truly the color of an orange, no green to it and the back of the petals are orange from the stem turning a reddish black at the ends.

My avatar is an unregistered seedling hybridized by friends of mine. They gave it to me and gave me naming rights. I'll be registering it this year or next. Thumbs up

Your picture looks like June Williams' NIGHT WINGS, hybridized back in 1985. What is the bloom size? Can you tell if it is a tetraploid? NIGHT WINGS. Is a tet, although that information may still be incorrect in the AHS database.

That is very cool Mary. nodding

Hi Julie. While I know what tetraploid means (44 chromosomes?) I have never tried to cross this plant with any of my other daylilies, so I could not say one way or the other.

I do not think Night Wings is what I have, for a number of reasons. The bloom at its' fullest is only 3.5 to 4 inches across, and it seems Night Wings is much closer to 6 inches. Mine is black over red-orange and the throat is orange with no hint of green or yellow. And, Night Wings was introduced in 1985, and I purchased this one on sale for $3.50 per gallon container in 1986 and lastly, the scapes on this plant are on average 22 to 24 inches while Night Wings is closer to 30 inch scapes..

It can get very frustrating trying to figure this one out. Thanks for offering your help. I tip my hat to you.

black cat sure looks like it, but the size is too big? I have never grown that, but some of the ones I grow do not actually match the size they are registered. Honestly, I think a lot of dl are smaller than the reg size. I know many of mine don't reach the reg heights.

Thank you so much for helping. I have been looking through AHS database as time permits and realize that the parentage of some listed "black" daylilies also needs to be researched. Blinking As I am able I will check out each of your suggestions.

I spoke with folks at the nursery where I purchased it. All they could offer from that long ago was that many of their DL's were hybrids/crosses from Sutton, Corliss, Alexander, Russell and Wheeler. They said I may never find this one, as the above breeders were doing a lot of their work in the 50's and 60's and there may not be any pictures available for comparison. I was also told that around that time frame black daylilies were "en vogue" and mistakes were made at the grower level with names. Sighing! I took that to mean it was indeed mislabeled and they have no idea where it came from...but, I already know it was incorrectly labeled, so that is pretty much no information.

Again, thank you for your time.

I just checked out Black Cat. It grows taller, the bloom is much larger and it is not evergreen. It is listed as having a yellow eye zone and green throat. My noid has no discernable difference between the color of the throat and eye zone...they are truly orange.

in zone 9 lots of dl may act like an evergreen. I have evergreens here in MO that disappear completely in the winter. I just don't use that as a way to ID because it can vary so much depending on the growing conditions.
