This is our first summer with our new greenhouse. We've had lots of rain recently and expect to have more than our share of mosquitoes in general. We are used to having Mosquito Time in our yard. You know, that awesome time of day just after the sun sets? We know the mosquitoes love to be outside then, too.

But I've noticed mosquitoes really, really love being in the greenhouse all the time, 24/7. I need help if I am going to enjoy the greenhouse this summer. I have heard about using camphor tablets in water, growing Citronella or Lemongrass, a screen on the back of the box fan, citronella candles. Do any of those actually work?? I want to be able to enjoy the greenhouse this summer, not to mention it's where I get the repotting and planting seeds done. Help?

You can use a simple fogger, a size meant to be used in a single room and found at any of the big box stores. I use a fogger in the fall, just before loading my greenhouses with tropical plants for over-wintering. I also use a lot of sticky sheets throughout my greenhouses and these sheets catch just about anything that flies.

Shady - know what you mean about various insects loving the GH. Wasps seem to love making a nest in mine. As for bloodsuckers, you could try a mosquito trap if you don't want to spray. The "trap" is basically a container of water like a bucket or bowl with some bti mosquito dunks (or granules) added to it. The female mosquitoes are attracted to the water for breeding purposes and they do lay eggs in the water but the bti keeps the babies from developing. You won't see immediate relief but you might see a reduction in the number of mosquitoes over time.

I will try the trap. I want to stay clear of chemicals for now and try alternatives as I am in the GH a lot and I don't want to be surrounded by chems, let alone spray it on me. Thought, an insect strip or three I think I can handle. I may be defeated in my avoidance of chems but it's worth a try.
The mosquitoes after these rains are the size of small cranes!! I did some research and found there are no such things as Mosquito Hawks or other mosquito-eating insects. That the giant flying bugs I see are not Daddy Long Legs/Crane Flies but giant mutant mosquitoes! My Monkey Pot plant had one lone mosquito in it's cups. The anoles are outside looking for bigger game. Basically, I am left to my own undertaking. I have a bit of window screen which I will attach to the back of the box fan with magnets. It has already sicked in 2 Crane Flies but I am sure the mosquitoes are sucked through it unharmed.
After all this, I have and old can of OFF in the pantry if need be. sigh

The sticky strips have no chemical whatsoever. The color attracts the insects and then the sticky surface "captures" them. Those foggers are made to use inside the house and are tested to be safe with even pets and children, as long as you follow the directions. Of course, you won't be IN the greenhouse when you "fire" one up, and won't return for the period of time that the directions state. There are several foggers that use pyrethrum as their active ingredient. The EPA certifies foggers by the way.

Perhaps you could grow something with lemon-scented foliage in your GH. You would actually have to crush a leaf and rub it on your skin for it to repel the critters. I heard about this on a podcast at youbetyourgarden.com. Howard Garrett (The Dirt Doctor) is really big into mosquito traps instead of spraying. He's in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. You can get more details at his website on making mosquito traps. I bet TX is going to be carried away by mosquitoes after all of the rain you folks have been getting. Our property here is adjacent to wooded wetlands so we've had to try different things. I hate spraying the yard but thoughts of West Nile virus is even scarier.

Speaking of yards, there are several services that now spray for mosquitoes and guarantee no mosquito for 28 days. Mosquitoes don't generally bother me (but I sure wouldn't want to die from West Nile! ), but my wife can go out for 15 seconds, and if there is a mosquito within a quarter mile, she comes in with a bite. I can stay out for eight hours and never get a bite (that I am award of anyway).

Like Cindy's, our yard is bordered by "wooded wetlands" (aka cedar swamp in my case), so we have lots of mosquitoes and yes, they do seem to love the GH ! I've never done anything about them, (other than spraying myself with "Off") but that fogger that Ken mentioned sounds like a good idea to me. It seems that I've had so many bites over the years that I no longer get any kind of reaction to them, but even if they didn't spread West Nile they are just so darn annoying!!

Like Cindy said, get some Mosquito Dunks. You can get them at Lowes, Home Depot etc. I take a pair of scissors and cut off bits and stick them in the drain trays under my plants in the greenhouse and anywhere where water might accumulate. I also use about a quarter of a dunk in all of my watering cans. Problem solved. It's a biologic control .. not a poison/chemical - Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis - a naturally occurring soil bacteria.

We do use the Cutter yard spray early in the morning (before many of the beneficials are out and about) but there are areas where DH is not allowed to spray. If we don't get lots of rain, that can last for a month or so. We also put the mosquito dunks in our gutters in case there's any standing water there and in bird baths. Don't have any buckets or cans that sit out. Have a fountain that's always running. You can make a spray out of the mosquito dunks for spraying wet or damp pastures as well.

I went to Lowe's and picked up the Cutter yard spray. It works for all around the yard. But I have to wait for at least one or two dry days to put it down. Just too much rain here in Texas which of course is why we have so many mosquitoes all of the sudden to begin with. I put a screen on the back of the box fan using little magnets and a little pan of water to attract the female. The dunks will only kill the larvae. I want to kill the adults, ,too. I opted for the $5 no name citronella candle over the $7 and $8 name brand candles. I lit it, stood safely in the wake of the box fan and watched 15-20 mosquitoes quickly exit out the GH upper windows. I kept the candle burning at the double doors while I worked inside. A few stupid ones who stayed behind got smacked by my quick hand. But I did end up with a few bites while mowing and feeding plants. I wore the Clip On but it seems you have to sit still for it to work. Sit still??

I might toss some dunk bits into the forest. I thought I had the low spots taken care of this winter but I might have missed some.

Moving air does keep the mosquitoes at bay. When sitting on our patio on those still days, we'll bring out a fan to run rather than constant spraying. Tried the clip-on thing and it really only works when you're sitting still. I wasn't fond of the idea that I was constantly breathing in the repellent.
