If you were in a friend's garden and you spy a daylily that you would instantly recognize without a tag, what would that daylily be?
I am recently bringing some of my beds under control from weeds. All tags were gone, no garden map, all I knew was that spider/UFs belonged there. I relocated the plants to a new bed, waiting for the cvs to bloom so I could identify them. This was the cv that I knew instantaneously.

Great thread idea. It's hard to pick just one, but I'd say Bonibrae Sharky.

Kabby, on the iris forum they have a NOID thread. Everyone post pics of what they are trying to ID. Then people make suggestions so they can check the stats in the database. Good luck.

Malaysian Monarch is my choice.

@bluegrassmom Teresa I have actually posted some iris on that thread but I didn't read far enough along to know they were trying to get their iris IDed. No one volunteered info about my plants anyway.
You're a better woman than me, even though I've had hundreds of Munsons, too many have watermarks for me to ID reliably. Blinking

Kabby, those threads often move so fast that sometimes posts are unintentionally overlooked. Had it happen to me more than once. Smiling

I love the question "The one daylily you will always recognize?"
I am still "new" to daylilies, maybe after ten years or so I won't feel so new anymore. I am still shocked to see the photos in the data base of the same daylily and the variety of colors and patterns etc. I took photos this morning and found it very interesting, some of the new blooms did indeed look like what I expected, some did not. So right now for me, looking through all my photos I wonder if there is actually a single one that I would not be easily fooled on if they were growing in another garden. But having said that, one that recently bloomed for me and was instantly recognized (The FFOE looked just like it should) was Bonnie Corley, the feathered eye made this bloom stand out. Photo taken this morning, notice the beetle in the flower. I have been seeing a lot of these lately down in the bloom and you can see some damage on the sepal on the right, I am blaming the beetle for that.

That's probably a cucumber beetle. They are very destructive and extremely hard (if not impossible) to kill. Although present all during the growing season, they are particularly prevalent here in the fall when they start shredding the roses, Helianthus, Asters etc. The damage you point out on your daylily is typical. Some years are worse then others.....Very distinctive daylilies btw Fred. Really nice patterns......Maryl

No,I don't think it's a cucumber beetle...I do have some of those and I did take a photo with one on a daylily bloom. This beetle is much larger and no spots or strips. I picked off a couple on different plants this morning. I will start another thread and add photos showing the beetle better later. I tip my hat to you.

Given that there are how many thousands of registered cultivars? - I'd be hesitant to try to identify most daylilies, especially if I did not know with absolute certainty what it was that was growing in my friend's garden.

That said, I think I would be comfortable in identifying 'White Stripe' in anyone's garden.

I would also be comfortable with a few of the polymerous daylilies, including 'Hip to Be Square'.

Now, a related but also interesting (and perhaps practical) question is, of the couple hundred plus daylilies in my own garden (even if in pots), which would I be able to identify without tags, if the plants were all moved but the tags all fell off?

Again, 'White Stripe', anything polymerous (lol), anything double (because I don't have that many doubles), anything UFO or spidery, 'Angelus Blue Skies', 'Mary's Gold', some of the diploid near-whites, 'Willow Dean Smith' (easily distinguishable from 'Beautiful Edgings'), 'Coming Up Roses', 'One Fine Day', anything patterned (because I don't grow many of those)...

On the other hand, some of the near-white tets I might have trouble distinguishing, ditto the pink tets... Confused
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

Polymerous, that's a good pic of Hip to be Square.

I have a new one. Today is the first time I've seen this bloom but I won't forget it.

I recognize Open Hearth....Primal Scream...Lotus Position...SC.Seashells. Actually, there are a few spacecoast daylily I recognize. There are many that I think I recognize, but have been fooled by a look a like many times. I know people will post pictures, and I think, o thats so and so...and then they post the name, and it isnt so and so Confused OOO I can always recognize my little Mary Ethel Anderson.

I think its sometimes easier to recognize who their parents are...such as God Save The Queen...Rose F. Kennedy..Emerald Starburst...etc. Fancy face...super fancy face. I look now to see if there is any GSTQ in the background. I am so sick of getting sdlgs. that all look like that. That flower has the strongest genes, and I dont really care for it.

@gardenglory Pam I adore MEA. When I decided I was going to buy a few minis again, MEA and Nacogdoches Bing Cherry were the first two on my list. Great little beauties. Hurray!

In 2003, when attending my first AHS Convention, as the bus pulled up at the first convention tour garden ( this was in the Charlotte NC area) we saw a clump of PRIMAL SCREAM that every one of us on the bus recognized before we even took one step off the bus. It was a magnificent clump, and we all clustered around it when we got off. PRIMAL SCREAM went on to win the Stout Medal that year ( did I mention I was on the Garden Judges bus?) and I remain convinced that a big reason it won was that wonderful clump we saw at that year's convention. I never need a marker to ID that one, nor do I need a marker to ID ROSE F. KENNEDY, GREEN RAINBOW, MARY'S GOLD, PURPLE CHEETAH, PINK STRIPES, and several others that don't come to mind as readily! However, when touring a garden, it quickly drives me crazy when the cultivar name tags are not readily visible, as I am in the habit of photographing cultivar, tag, cultivar, tag, etc. and get into a routine. If I can't read the tags, usually I become so frustrated, that I go SIT DOWN and check out the refreshments and quit trying to take pictures. A bad habit, I guess, but deeply ingrained at Regional and National tours. Having said that, you will very rarely find me sitting down and not taking pictures at a tour garden. It doesn't happen often, thank goodness, but I think Regional and National tour gardens have an obligation to have cultivars clearly labeled. I highly recommend the AAA markers - have been using those since 1997, and the only one I ever lost got accidentally run over by a lawn mower.
