It has a very deep purple stalk, with branches in whorls, or prongs, similar to the way ginseng does, but it doesn't terminate at the first whorl.
I tried to capture what I assume are seed heads in one pic.
Sorry the light and pics in general are so dark, it was very thick canopy overhead.

I'm interested in the response you get. I have those too. They've insinuated themselves into my Cimicifuga and it's sometimes hard to tell one from the other.

The link you gave looks very much like it, but I don't think it is.
This link to the plant you suggest makes it clear it's not the right plant
http://www.friendsofthewildflo...

I don't think this plant is in the carrot family.
The stem is very straight and hard, no sign of an enlarged root.

I'm suspicious that my plant is a medicinal herb from Appalachia, the area I've found it in is very unusual, with MANY plants that should not be there.

Thanks Stefan

I guess I need to go back and check more details, that genus is starting to look like the right one... Maybe this is just a very dark one...

It does look like it could be some type of Osmorhiza. Perhaps longistylus? It's said to have green or purple stems.

The type I have is very similar; except that my stems are hirsute rather than glabrous.

Could it be Doll's Eyes/Actaea pachypoda?

Edit, never mind, you did post seed heads.....
