I want to create my plant list, but can't figure out how to add a photo in the "Thumb" box. I'm sure it's relatively easy as Dave makes it so; but I can't see an area to click on to download a photo. How do I do this ? Thanks

Elfie, I'm not real good at explaining things but try this. Find the plant in the database; for instance this Crepe Myrtle that you posted on the Fla. Gardening Fourm: Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia Black Diamond® Mystic Magenta™)

On the left side of the screen in the blue bar, scroll down to where it says "Add this plant to your list" and click on that narrow dark blue bar. It will then give instructions to click on "Have", "Used to have" etc. It will then show up on your profile page in your plant list.

Elfie, *Blush* I just looked at your profile and it already shows that you have a plant list, you have that Crepe Myrtle listed. To add other plants just find the plant in the database and add it by clicking on the dark blue area on the side bar.

Oh, I see the problem. Normally, the photo that shows up in the database will appear in the thumb box. But there is no photo in the database for that plant. If you have a photo, you can add it to the database and get 2 acorns for posting the first picture!

I understand what you're saying. The photo for my crape myrtle was added to the data base by another member so shouldn't that have appeared in the "thumb" ?
Also, does this mean that you are adding photos from the data base that aren't necessarily yours ---- or do have to get your own accepted first ? Sorry, I'm feeling a little "thick" in the head this morning !! Gotta be this heat - sucks it out of you.

That photo is probably still waiting to be approved, because I don't see it when I click on that entry. I think Dave was going to do something to make it possible to select which photo shows up in your plant list, but right now it's the one with the most "thumbs up" in the database.

Aha! Your photo got entered as "Ebony Fire," not Mystic Magenta.
I submitted the other photo just now as Mystic Magenta. We'll see what happens.

I love having a plant list on here! Whenever I can't remember something about one of my plants, it's on here in the listing info or in my notes.

Me too!
They'll set my headstone soon after!

I'll be very excited to be able to add my own pic to match the plants in my list, I had that other people's plant show up when I go to see my plants...
The plant list is very nice!
Especially when you have tags or just buy a new plant...
Going back thru and adding old plants you lost the name of can really be tricky!
I have dozens of things that I'm unsure of the cultivar, that one drives me nuts " do I have this or this or this.... I dunno, it's red hot poker... No idea beyond that!"
So many plants of mine are like that,
But I'll keep plugging on it and get it looking good!

Thanks to Dave, and all the admins and moderators that keep all this stuff in order for us, the plant database is really becoming something to behold in terms of sheer info available, but still leaves some things to be desired.
It's nice to know so many folks are working so hard behind the scenes!
I try to do my part but I pale in comparisons to many of our members! And certainly the higher ups.
I think my phone being my only access to ATP may be part of the reason that list management is so tedious.
I tip my hat to you.
Please tree mail me for trades, I'm ALWAYS actively looking for more new plants, and love to trade!

When you're unsure of your cultivar, you can add the plain species to your list and add notes about the cultivars that could match, URLs of reference, date you got it, whatever you want.

Since I've been keeping a plant list on here, the first thing I do when I get a new plant is add it to the list. Then I can get rid of the tag and if I forget, it's on my list.

One thing that would really help would be to be able to sort by date added, I often reference my list looking for the names of the newest plants, which I haven't had time to memorize yet. And an option to show the botanical names first, or at least put the names on 2 lines. It's hard to skim down the page when the location of the first letter of the words I'm trying to read keeps changing.

I don't mind if it's not one of my pics that's the thumb for each plant. Any pics I've added are on the page to reference. LOVE the way the date uploaded is attached to the DB pics. If I forget when I took a pic, it's on there.

You can also add you own photo to the comment section which shows up a bit larger. I rather like having two photos - the most popular thumbnail plus my personal photo.

They do take up a bit more space, tho. Take a look at the first entry in my list; I did it just for a test. (I think it will show up for you. )

I usually search my own list for what I want using my big sreeen so the space used is not an issue. I also have never printed my list. I think it all depends on how you use particular functions.
