Today I took a break and watched a few videos. One was by a man called The Amaryllis Man (Charlie Johnston); he showed how to tell when the seed pods were ready to harvest. Another video showed how to plant, either by sprouting in water or planting directly into soil/medium. Didn't have time to watch all the videos today.

I went out to the front garden and by coincidence, one Amarayllis seed pod was ripe and ready to pick.

Wish me luck; growing these from seed will be a new experience for me. Any and all advice welcome.

Harvest seed pod on May 28th; allowed to dry for a few days; shook out seeds and allowed one more day to dry.
Decided to use the 'water' method to germinate the seeds.

Here is the result on June 30th:
15 seeds have germinated:


Best looking 3 seeds:


These 6 need more time:


Some seeds have shown no life yet but I will wait a bit longer for those just in case they decide to grow.

Congrats! You have baby amaryllis. I'm looking for some ripe seed heads to try that too.

Just saw this today Greene, congrats, that's great that you got Amaryllis seeds to germinate. What cross are the seeds from?

Didn't make any intentional cross. Here are the bulb I received in a lovely trade a few years ago and a pic of the blooms.


Here it is in a pot doing its best to look beautiful by leaning on the Opuntia.


Finally found a permanent location in the front garden bed and the plant is happy enough to make seeds.


My neighbor has some Amaryllis that are a pale pink. Have no idea what the bees did so time will tell.

Very pretty, the seedlings may look like the parent as the bees go from one bloom to the next, anyway it will be free plants to add to your garden.

Btw, Green, your Amaryllis looks like it could be Minerva.

Free plants, yes. For my garden, no. I regularly propagate all types of plants to give away at our local swap.
Maybe next year I will 'borrow' some pollen from my neighbor down the street.

The seedlings - about half of them did not survive being planted in the tray. The other half look good but are a bit camera shy.

It has taken me a while to get back to this thread. Yesterday and today I learned that what I have been calling 'Amaryllis' is a Hippeastrum and the common name is Amaryllis. Took me a while to adjust. The label with the bulb said only 'Outdoor Garden Amaryllis Red and White'. Since I cannot find an Amaryllis or Hippeastrum with the name 'Red and White' do you think this really is a Minerva? I have not added this plant to my list here on ATP because I was unsure. I did not see a generic entry for unidentified Hippeastrum, so do you think it's safe to say that my plant is a Minerva?

Minerva has been on the market for 50 years and is the most common red and white cultivar used in generic boxed red/white bulbs. I've also seen "Cocktail" in the boxed generic red and white, but it looks a little bit different. There can be some variation in the blooms of Minerva, depending on what strain is currently being used by a particular grower. I think its 90% likely that your bulb is Minerva, so this is a case where you can label it that. There is more confusion with generic boxed reds and pink/whites. In the past, you expected Red Lion and Apple Blossom, but that's not always the case anymore. Boxed Whites can be any one of several different cultivars. However, if the box is labeled Apple Blossom, than it had better be Apple Blossom. When a grower mislabels a bulb, then I consider that fraud.

Yes it can be confusing with the Hippeastrum and Amaryllis, and now that you have a second opinion on your bloom, you can go ahead and put a tag on Minerva.

Update:
With no care whatsoever I have 7 seedlings remaining.


What I have learned so far is that I planted them at the wrong depth. I'll do better next time.

It must feel good to have some success with your own seeds the 1st time trying. What do you mean by planting them at the wrong depth? Too deep, not deep enough? I'm and hoping to learn from other's mistakes.

I have no clue. When I planted them I basically just stuck them into the planting medium. The fact that some survived and some failed shows me that the depth must be important somehow. For the most part I believe I planted them too deeply. I will attempt to learn from my own mistakes.

Here the best planting depth is when only the bulb is in the soil, and just a little bit of the leafs. 18 remaining from this year's sowing attempt(lemon lime x benefica and lemon lime x splash). I could've had about 50 seedlings, but i don't really have room for that. They've really started growing once i planted them in the soil. I always use the water method, because once i tried to plant them in the soil directly, they all rotted away :(
