Do any of you grow this? It's all over the side of the road here. I can get all I want for free. Is it going to take over the flower beds? Any suggestions about growing it in the flower bed? I am doing an all-white flower bed and wanted to use some of it.

Clint, it will self sow all over the place you would have to cut off before the seeds disperse. They have lots of seeds. I made the mistake of getting some for free it took me a long time to get rid of it all when I missed removing a few seed heads.

Around here it is considered an invasive weed. Just seeing how they grow on the side of the roads I would think they would take over a garden. Also not a great plant to have around if you have allergies.

I saw something else called false Queen Ann's Lace. I think Burpee sells seeds. It's an annual. Is that as bad?

QAL is called Chigger plant or chigger weed because chiggers love to hide on these plants. Although chiggers are a pain when they bite us they do play an important part in nature by feeding on insect eggs, small insects, and other organisms throughout their lives. Green Lacewings also hang out on QAL to eat prey, such as aphids. Cats of the Eastern Black Swallowtail butterfly love the leaves. honeybees love working the flowers and mason bees stop by to check them out from time to time also. The leaves of the plant are toxic but the root of Queen Anne's Lace is likely a direct ancestor of the modern carrot and very edible.

Clint, if the false QAL was Ammi, it will reseed as well. I grew it for cut flowers for market as a filler flower. It gets tall. I didn't think it was so hard to pull up volunteers and since it is an annual, you would probably want some volunteers. I didn't find it invasive here.

There is an annual, Orlaya grandiflora - Minoan Lace, that provides the same look in a garden, although a bit shorter. I've grown it and it is a lovely plant. Lush, ferny, emerald green foliage below many lace cap type blooms. Winter sowing works great with this plant. I experienced no problems with reseeding in my area. ... Myles

The birds planted QAL last spring and I was so happy about it...... by the end of the summer it was everywhere and w/that taproot, a pain to pull out. I shoveled out all I could see but noticed this winter some in my iris, which I can't get out unless I uproot the iris. I have fond memories of cutting it as a kid and putting it in colored water to get the flowers colored, but I think I will appreciate it along the roadside only!

I love the looks of the Orlaya Grandiflora too and definitely would like to add that to the garden.

It's invasive here too. Taproot makes it hard to pull.
Early growth looks like Yarrow soI have made the mistake of pulling that too. Replant right away when I discover the mistake.

I spray with color spray for flowers...if I want red, white and blue...I spray some red and some blue...hold real well in a bouquet...grows wild in middle Tennessee...
