Any non-toxic preventative other than scrubbing off often? Water is drinking source for pets. No plants or fish. A mostly pondless feature with 3 bubbler rock columns dripping down to a river rock base.

I know you said no plants or fish..but when I had an aquarium tank before, the only effective ones that gets rid of it are plecostomus and in some other set-ups they have been using amano shrimp.

I will check into those, thanks. I'm not opposed to plants or fish just currently don't have any. It may make sense to incorporate some, design is not yet final.

You could try a non-chemical product called Viresco Aqua, which we use in our three ponds to keep them completely clear of string algae. It was originally developed to promote fish health and they discovered that it also eliminated algae. It's sold online (from the UK, but prices include worldwide postage). Two of our ponds contain fish (koi and goldfish) and all three are used by various pets and wildlife for drinking water. If you have no fish it's likely that a small dose would keep yours clear for a year or more. Check them out at www.viresco-uk.com/information/about_viresco.asp

Thanks, I will indeed check into that product. For the time being, I am rather enjoying just cleaning off the rocks now and again. Kind of a bonding experience.
