our 5 Dahlias came up about three weeks ago and they're all about a foot tall so far. we protect them at night then remove the "cover" during the day. well since they're getting so tall we figured it was time to stop using the cover. it was becoming very impractical. and of course, it rained last night and most of the day today. its been fairly dry this past week. I get home and find holes all over the Dahlia leaves!!! I turn one of them over and I see two, not one, but TWO, 1/2 inch long baby slugs having a field day!!! I glance to my left and see two, not one, but TWO, 2 inch long adult slugs in hot pursuit of the plants!!! we all know what happened next...

The slugs l have seen around my home are usually really small, less than an inch and gray. The slugs create no problems for the plants, because of natural predators.

Anolis carolinensis, the green anole, eats them. This is the second year l have had my potted plants in the back yard and the anoles have had a population explosion. Love them lizards.

And frogs, toads and some snakes eat the slugs. I have lots of toads and frogs and some snakes. There is a large pond between my sisters house and mine. The frogs are so loud at night you would think they've come inside to serenade me.

Them slugs up in Washington are humongous!

Reine - they're so big I wouldn't be surprised to see one of them driving by me on the highway!!

We were always rural until the last couple of years and I never saw a slug or large snail where we lived. Now everywhere were go slugs and huge snails.

I just clicked on the word "quote" at the bottom of Seedfork's post, and it automatically put [ quote="Seedfork"]See the word "Quote" down by the green thumb?[/quote ] up at the top of my post, which, once you click on "finished," ends up as the quote with the box around it. Hope that helps!

After you get the "quote box" imported into your reply, you can then edit it down to remove words or images you didn't need to echo, like I did above.

@riverman123...i feel your pain about the slugs. I've had more than usual this year...they ate all my tropical lupine. Then someone told me to put some aluminum foil around the stem at the base. I did that to several plants that the slugs had been bothering and there were no more signs of slug activity on the plants with foil at the base. So, this worked great for me.

@Reine...thanks for the information about what eats slugs, i was just about to search that.

Then i went hunting and i appear to be slug free...usually they are not such a problem for me.
