Thread OP

This tree grew in our neighbor's backyard in West Palm Beach, FL. It got to this size in about four years. Our neighbors who are Vietnamese said that they got it from a Thai man who has a nursery somewhere farther south. They eat the fruit green. The last image is a similar tree that I saw near my son's school.

Most assuredly, NOT a mango. If anything likely some kind of smooth bark Asian sapodilla.

here is a picture of a mature tree. Says it bears fruit 2 times a year but flowers more often. Evergreen and takes 5-8 yrs to bear fruit. Does that sound like it?

no, it is not a sapodilla. A search shows alternate leaves and your photo shows leaves straight across from each other on the stem, like pairs.

It looks like it might be a Spondias dulcis tree, we called it a June plum. It looks like the tree in my friends yard in Houston. She bought a house with one like it in the yard

Sorry for the serious nature of this post.
This is one of those times when I say, "You need to eat faster".
If the fruit is allowed to ripen, seeds spread, this tree has serious potential to be invasive.
Not a problem if the fruit, all the fruit, is harvested and consumed while green.
This is in introduced and potentially invasive tree. (Sorry. *Blush* )
I would be especially careful as Florida has a delicate ecosystem and things can get out of hand pretty quickly.

anything that grows really fast and is not native and has masses of flowers/seeds is highly suspect.

I totally agree with the non native, fast growing trees, her tree has not spread and after having it for years, she has given seeds away and no one to date has gotten them to germinate. She has checked on the *invasive* lists from time to time and it is just a potential risk.
I have no dog in this race, just repeating what I have been told Sighing! Living in Houston, she knows how quickly things can take over on land and in lakes

I have tasted the fruit and would love to have one but I have plants that try to take over my yard and my friends never have that problem with them, LOL

I would like to have the contact information for the Thai nursery man who lives 'further south' (in Florida?). I have been looking for a certain plant (non-invasive; cannot be gown from seed) and he may have it in stock. Can you please ask your friend and either post the info or send me a Tree-mail.? Thank You!

I've heard Sponditis called Golden Apple, Wild Mango and Tahitian Apple. Not sure which species grows in South Fla. but probably S. dulcis or S. pinnata.

Tahitian Apple (Spondias dulcis)
http://www.hort.purdue.edu/new...

This article says S pinnata is native to tropical Asia, grows and fruits well in southern Florida but is not well known: http://university.uog.edu/cals...

Sorry, as I don't mean to be hijacking this thread, but since you asked...

Jolana said:What is it, if you don't mind saying, if not, I understand, lol

Jolana, I don't mind saying; it's called Pandanus or Pandan leaf. It is commonly grown in a Thai 'kitchen garden' and used when preparing food. There is no substitute for this when cooking - and y'all know that green is my favorite color. Lovey dubby But sadly my plant died as it did not enjoy my indoor climate in the winter; I hate to buy from some stranger on eBay.

When I saw the nursery man was a Thai, I immediately thought of this plant. He might know it as Bai Toey Hom, or Baitoey.
Here is a link showing several Thai food plants including the Pandan leaf/Bai Toey.

Pandan wangi (Pandanus amaryllifolius)

If you want to see the creative ways that 'chefs' use this plant leaf, use the key words 'folded pandan leaf' in a Google Image search.

Okay, back to the original purpose of the thread; sorry for the interruption. Whistling

Thread OP

Sorry, I haven't been back. Unfortunately, I don't have any information on the person who sold them the tree. My neighbors divorced and the husband left. And he was never that precise about where they got the tree. We live in West Palm Beach, so the guy was probably in Broward or Dade.

This looks exactly like it, I'll concur with spondia dulcis.
http://www.panoramio.com/photo...

As for invasiveness, it grows incredibly fast, but in my 20 years in S. Florida, I've only seen 2 (and I've been looking). Yellow tabs on the other hand...

Maybe the tree is one of the S. dulcis varieties that will not become invasive.
